Re: any one have a tang with ick live with-out quarentine

UV can help, but won't cure ich. have you tried soaking foods in garlic? Not a cure either, but can help boost their immune system, so they can fight it off. Othewise, a well cycled quarantine tank with hyposalinity and/or medication is really the only way to kill the parasite. If the ich is in your display tank, then it would have to be kept fallow (no fish at all) for about 6 weeks.

Call me crazy but back in the day if my fish got ick I used to give em a freshwater dip... usually cleared it right up

Re: any one have a tang with ick live with-out quarentine

My Chevron tank has shown no signs for well over a month. May be even 2. UV, garlic, and Selcon was what I used and atm still do. i will probably cut back on the uv this weekend since there is a lot of tank work on the weekend work list. it has been running 24/7 since the outbreak so I am going to cut back to 12hrs a day and if no symptoms appear after a couple of weeks turn it off.
Also on a bright note none of the rest of my fish every showed any signs of he disease.
Oh and also I am babysitting a hippo tang that apparently had a very bad case. he was treated with a freshwater dip and has been fine for quite some time. (I did not do this he is in my qt tank with several buddies waiting for his new tank to cycle and this happened long before he was here.)

G'day all'
between 74 and 86 we've had ours at when our Regal got ick! in a coral tank too! so we couldn't give him a dipping, though also fed reguarly eventually shook it off with no medicine- go figure just luck i suppose also nitrate idles on 40ppm in this tank with angels- go figure that one out it's 18 months old.We have burried many fish in 2yrs and it hurts me the most when its a tang so our tanks are divided now due to the past .Even though the books say fish death is due to human error some things are just out of control!

my powder blue made it through a recent bout with ich. I think mine got it right after Lynn's chevron and sailfin had their bout. Mine also kept eating and I'm sure with my soaking the food in garlic extreme helped a lot. Mine must of been sick about 3 weeks but that seemed like 3 years to me. Thankfully my powder blue has been getting fatter and sassier since getting well.

Re: any one have a tang with ick live with-out quarentine

yes, razz, this tang was in my main tank and no other fish ever got any ich spots. I also have a genicanthus angel, copperband and a school of green chromis. No one else got sick. Thankfully...

Re: any one have a tang with ick live with-out quarentine

When I first set up my tank, the hippo tang I purchased 3 weeks later got ich. I did a freshwater dip on him and nearly killed him. He laid behind some live rock for three straight days, barely breathing. After that, he came out to eat and within a week was doing great. Ich is still in the tank, and somtimes new fish come down with it, but they always shake it off. I'm always really careful to only buy fish that are eating well at the FS.

I think ich is a fairly normal parasite, and stressed fish are prone to attack. Once the stressed fish's immune system rallies back, they can combat the ich.

I'd be more afraid to try the freshwater dip than let the fish try to combat it. Of course, if the fish stops eating, perhaps the freshwater dip would then be worth the risk.

Re: any one have a tang with ick live with-out quarentine

i have but a long time ago. sence then i have learnd, even though it can be a pain, its so worth QTing everything. i am a firm believer in QTing at least 45days. i now have many ick prone fish but have QT'd them all in hyposalinity prior to going in the tank. fish like clown gobies and hippo tangs. sence starting that i have never ever had any fish with a outbreak. i can smile now say i have a ick free tank. no matter how stressed they get, i do stess them alot from time to time, none get sick.

Re: any one have a tang with ick live with-out quarentine

My tang had ick not to long ago, I just left him in the tank and let my cleaner shrimp clean it off when ever it appeared, I haven't seen it in a couple of weeks now, but I did start to notice him acting kind of wierd(breathing fast, not eating, twitching) I started to add garlic to the food, and fed him sea weed, and now everthing is looking good. Good luck.
