still got PO4

I posted this back in december.testing RO water
I have removed the canister filter, cut back on the feeding, done 3 25g water changes and I still have a PO4 of 0.2. I think it must be leaching out of the rocks because before adding them I never had a hair algae problem or a PO4 problem.

Here is a thread about possible causes of PO4. Lots of good info but I did have to read it twice - all 20 pages. http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/sh...threadid=28107

May be time to start looking at your sand bed. I didn't see anywhere in that thread, may have missed it... are you skimming? If so, what kind of skimmer? Also size of tank, number and types of fish. Sorry if it's in the other thread, refresh our memories.

Do you drip kalkwasser? Thaqt causes PO4 to precipitate out of the water. Doesn't fix the core problem, but time and reduced feedings should.

The tank is a 75g . no sump. Remora hang on skimmer with a Maxjet 1200 upgrade. the sand bad is a mix of 200 lb of Southdown and 40 lb live sand (about 2-3 inch deep). sand was put in back in March of 2003. I only have 2 fish one yellow tang and a blue damsel. the yellow tang I have had for 3 years. I got the blue damsel when I set this new tank up in march. the live rock was added in September. I only use ro/di water with IO salt
I do not drip kalk...... don't know if I need to its a FOWLR. but if you think it will help I will start. if you need any more info let me know

He said he did that in the previous post. I know mojoreef had a good suggestion of taking a sample from the sand bed with water, then using that water for the po4 test to see how much of a jump there is. Might point to the sand bed. Also, I'm having a bit of a nutruent problem myself, this weekend I tore down my remora and cleaned the whole thing out.... air inlet valve, pump, and skimmer. There must have been 1/4" or more of detritus on the bottom of that thing. If it's been a few months, it's a good idea for you to do the same. My skimmer cup filled up in 3 minutes immediately after the cleaning, and has been skimming an amazing amount of gunk ever since. Can;t hurt to try that, it's good to do once in a while anyway.

thanks again Travis for the quick response back. I don't want to sound like I'm shooting down your help(I'm still a rookie so any input is very helpful), but I did clean the skimmer out. it helped with the skimming but not with the PO4. as far as the sand bed goes.... what would cause the sand to start giving off PO4. the sand has been in since march when I set it up and never gave me a problem. it just seems that as soon as I went from a FO tank to a FOWLR the tank went down hill. Now lets just say the rock is giving off the PO4, will it stop after some time or is this something that I will always have to deal with.

mnreefman : I do rinse all my frozen food in ro/di water. I put the cube in a brine shrimp net and float it in a cup of ro/di water then rinse

So the only thing you did was add LR? Where did you get the rock from?

Don't worry about shooting stuff down, process of elimination.

I got the rock and cured it in a Rubbermaid tub for over 6 weeks, lots of water changes scrubbed the rocks ect ect... only added them to the tank after all tests were good
I love the rock. I look at it every night with a flash light, there is a lot of life running around. only problem is that the coraline is dieing and I know its due to the PO problem.
