| Reef Lobster | 5x turnover enough for frag tank guys, as many of you know, i set up a frag tank in line with my main display last weekend, a 20L tank. i was planning on using an MJ1200 to feed water to it, so i'd have 10x turnover... however, that was too much flow for my bulkhead (3/4"). so i went to a mj600. two questions... first is 5x turnover enough? I also have another mj600 in there providing flow for the frags. second... will my pvc drain/durso design affect flow? right now, I don't even HAVE a durso, i was planning on doing one this weekend. right now i just have a 90 degree elbow off of the bulkhead. i'd really like to get the 1200 going on this, but i just need a little more info... this whole flow area is definitely my weak spot in figuring things out. thanks!

| Acropora ![]() | Re: 5x turnover enough for frag tank I would suggest a powerhead in the tank for flow, your turnover rate of 5X should sufice. Just my 2 cents

| Reef Shark ![]() | Re: 5x turnover enough for frag tank Gotta remember, "turn over" includes ALL sources of flow, not just what passes thru the sump. IMO, 5X thru the sump is a little low, but may suffice.

| Reef Lobster | Re: 5x turnover enough for frag tank thanks boomer. i'm going to redo the drain set up and see if that enables me to run a 1200, which definitely would prefer. that would put me at 10-12x turnover to the sump.

| Reef Shark ![]() | Re: 5x turnover enough for frag tank What size bulkhead are you using? 1" should flow 1000 gph easily...3/4" 600-800 gph.

| Reef Lobster | Re: 5x turnover enough for frag tank 3/4 threaded bulkhead -> threaded pvc joiner -> 3/4" pvc -> 3/4" 90 degree pvc elbow down facing 3/4" pvc tee fitting -> 3/4" pvc -> 3/4" 90 degree pvc elbow -> flex pvc to sump down facing (off 3rd tee) 3/4" pvc ball valve 3/4" (for expansion to my fuge) now, i just thought that the backup from the ball valve might be slowing it down? i'm not sure. i'm not a pvc expert... if there's a better way to set this up... tell me! the angles might be a problem, or the flex pvc, i have NO idea. i was going to do a durso with a tee fitting and cap with a hole drilled in it this weekend.
