hi all-
im starting a tank and i was wondering-once the filters and substrate and salt levels are fine do i just go out and buy "CURED" live rock and put it in the tank or would i have to buy it and set it in a tub with a powerhead for a few days. there are no fish in the tank.
thanks so much

Re: live rock

If the tank is empty I would put it there. Keep a close eye out though. There are often lots of hitchikers that come in on the rock. Some are good, some are not.

Re: live rock

What lcstorc said. My new tank that I purchased from a guy has a 4" or so hitchiker crab that looks like a dungeness crab. Has killed all the snails, hermits, clams, anenomes, the thing is brutal. Once I transfer the tank that will be something comeing out.

Just a heads up so that if you notice things going missing, you may have some sort of nuissance and may be something to look for when getting new rock. Good luck

Re: live rock

maybe it would be a good idea to put the rock in without the sand and let it ''slough off'' a bit, this can then be easily dispersed by the flow and sucked up by the overflows. Also blasting with a turkey baster is a great idea.
not having the sand will allow you to better see the hitch hikers and also provide a more stable footing for the rock when you do put it in.

Re: live rock

Yes I agree Booze. No sand makes it easier, but I just discovered a crab in my qt which has been set up with lr only for almost 2 months. Not to mention many other critters that have appeared only after a significant time period. I now call it my science experiment since so much has appeared after an extended time.

Re: live rock

Well if it is not in the tank then no worries. Personally, I would return it and get sand instead. I have 50/50 sand and criushed coral and wish I had gone with the sand only.
If it is already in the tank then you will just need to watch more carefully. many things can/will hide in the substrate regardless of what kind. Keep your eyes open and make nightime checks for the nocturnal critters as well.

Re: live rock

Wherever the rock comes from. They are hidden in the crevices and holes within the rock. Some are quite small, but some you have to wonder how they hid so well for so long.

Yeah, where's my application? Unless you are not permitted to have hermits, cause I like mine.

Re: live rock

Yes, hermits to count, though there are some people who make exceptions for scarlet hermits since they seem to be the nicest.
I agree the hermits are fun to watch etc, but once they start eating your livestock (particularly snails) you may decide like I did that they have to go.

Re: live rock

"Cured" live rock shouldn't be a problem. MOST rock that you buy on-line is only "pre-cured" however, and still needs to be fully cured before placing in an established tank. With a new tank, just cure it in the tank...LOTS of water flow and a VERY good skimmer are needed however, as there will most likely be some die-off on the rock, which adds to the pollution levels in the tank. It does provide an excellent ammonia source for the cycle though...

Re: live rock

Hello welcome to RS....I had to read Boomers thread a few times> I think and tell me if Im wrong Boomer or reading your thread wrong... cured and precured is the same...

cured/precured is cured in a tank at the lfs for around 6 weeks,, but during shipment there may be die off on the rock again so it may cause a cycle again,, in a new tank ( with fish in it already) this may cause a SLIGHT rise in nitrates and be stressful to livestock. But it may be minimul

Totally uncured rock will have ALOT more die off and cause a huge cycle . Which is ok if there ISNT livestock in a new tank..

For your tank either rock will be ok.. because you dont have livestock yet..

I hope that makes sense and Im sorry if I read your thread wrong BoomerD
