| Neon dottyback | maxijet mods.. has anyone used or using the maxijet mods?? I just got 2 mj 1200's from a friend that made them for me. Talk about moving some water. Didn't know if the 2 would be enough for my 120g sps tank and I may get him to make me 1 more 1200 and then watch the polyps blow.

| Manta Ray | Re: maxijet mods.. i tried that mod did not like it so much. 2 maxijet 1200's is not enough flow for a 125g. thats only about 4x turnover rate. if this is a sps tank shoot for 20x about 2500gph. other corals do fine with around 10X tuenover, about 1200gph. at least try to get some where in the middle of 1200gph and 2500gph total turnover. within the main tank. include all flow return pumps powerhead ect...to figure out your turnover. FYI i have heard the 1200's overheat easy with the mod. i use the 900's never had a issue. another FYI the 1200's run at 20watts each putting out 295gph the 900's run at 8.5 with 230gph. thats more than double the wattage for 60gph more= less money to run and less heat realsed into the tank. food for thought if you have issue with the 1200's or just want to save on operating cost. |

| They misunderestimated me ![]() | Re: maxijet mods.. If it is the same maxijet mod I've been watching for the last almost year or so, you can get around 1200gph out of a MJ1200. 2-3 should be sufficent for a 120. However you are right that the MJ900 is more efficent in terms of flow per watt. Sue if you have pictures of the shroud can you post? I tried to make one, but it came out too ugly for me to risk putting in my tank ![]()

| Neon dottyback | Re: maxijet mods.. sorry I don't have a camera.. Someone I know made these for me and IMO, they came out looking very nice. After watching them most of yesterday I see some sand moving so I know the flow is much better in my tank. I also realized that 2 of these 1200's will not be near enough for my 120g besides my return. I have talked to my friend and he is going to modify another of my 1200 and a 900 I have. This should be more than enough. I have a large wave going at the top of my tank too.

| Reef Lobster | Re: maxijet mods.. one thing to be aware of, is that even with the right direction start mod, it's not suitable for use on a wavetimer... i have a couple of the modded ones in a 58, and they're great, but i wish i could do a timer.

| Neon dottyback | Re: maxijet mods.. thats what I heard too. I'm not using these on any kind of wavemaker. I am in fact also unplugging them at night too.

| They misunderestimated me ![]() | Re: maxijet mods.. How is the noise? You wouldn't happen to know which propellor he put on them?

| Neon dottyback | Re: maxijet mods.. The propeller is white if that helps Mike. Sorry... I can plug them in and you have to look to see water moving to see if they are on. Absolutely no noise. The only down thing I have seen or "heard" was that I didn't have them low enough and they do get a suction noise going with a little tornado looking deal. I also found out I didn't have them sitting correct and after turning them one quarter around they seem fine now.

| Torch coral | Re: maxijet mods.. regarding using on a wavemaker...is it not appropriate after the pump is modded? in their stock form maxijets are one of the recommended pumps.

| Reef Lobster | Re: maxijet mods.. after it's modded, 50% of the time it will get stuck and not come on. it has to do with the fact that every time an MJ starts up, it turns a different direction. the stock impellar isn't directional, but the modded ones are. if you let it reverse, it will suck things in. so there's a bump stop to stop the propellor and kick it back the right direction... which works *most* of the time... but (on mine at least) probably about 30-50% of the time i have to manually unstick it. not a big deal, as it's like 3 times a week in the morning i have to fix one when i turn em back on, but if you have a timer on a 30 second cycle... it won't work well.
