Who ate my crab?!?!?

Besides the "Crabs are Delicious Society" who would eat my scarlet hermit crab in broad daylight??? I left the room for 30 mins and I came back and there are a set of 3 little scarlet crab legs sitting on a rock... the rest of the crab and his shell are nowhere to be found ... Only snails, scarlets , 2 shrimp and now some legs in my tank

OR, it COULD be a molt, and it's hiding in the rockwork, waiting for it's new carapace to harden...

Re: Who ate my crab?!?!?

These legs look like they were ripped off violently... there is a bit of crab meat hanging from the end... I dont see any buttery finger prints on the glass... so that leaves another crab or mantis shrimp I guess... I really hope its not a mantis!

All I can say for sure is "not me" ROFL
Hope it is a molt and he is just hiding. If not I would look to any larger crabs etc. Is the shell there? Who is in it? That would give a good indication.

Re: Who ate my crab?!?!?

Do you have any other crabs or shrimp in the tank? Where did your live rock come from? Sometimes scartlet hermits just die or they get caught by a fish when attempting to change shells. Not sure why it is but I have seen hermits decide they just don't like the shell they have on their backs, they leave it only to be dinner for something else in the tank.

I only have Scarlet hermits, snails, a blood shrimp and a peppermint shrimp, no fish... there is also a nice assortment of empty shells I threw in the tank. Live rock came from LFS and the kid didnt know where it was from. Has lots of feather dusters a couple spagehtti worms. Ive seen one bristle worm countless coepods, some unknown tentacle looking things (small) a wormy thing and a tiny really fast thing... (hehe Im gonna be a marine biologist when i grow up!)

Re: Who ate my crab?!?!?

Keep an eye on the other inhabitants, if they start disappearing then I would worry and start looking for a mantis.

Re: Who ate my crab?!?!?

my vote is for molt. usually in reef tanks (imo) if they're eaten you won't see any debris... at least i didn't. if they molt, it does look like their legs have been ripped off. freaked me out the first time too.

Re: Who ate my crab?!?!?

Hmmm .... I got the legs out with a turkey baster... its a pair of tiny claws and 2 legs AND his 2 eye stalks... do they drop the eye stalks when they molt? there is one little crab nearby kind of hiding instead of running around munching on stuff It is still alive but not active at all Maybe he molted....
