Halimeda Question(s)

Last weekend I pulled a 2 gal pail full of halimeda from my display it smelled awfull, since removal I havent had to clean glass until today and skimmer production is way down. Question, is there a limit to amount per gallon? and if you have any does it stink? and if it stinks can it be good? Thanks Steve

Re: Halimeda Question(s)

I've got halimeda in my mantis tank... never noticed it smelling bad.

I've pulled Xenia from my 75, you talk about a STINK! Whew!

Tell ya what... next time I pull some halimeda from my mantis tank, I'll smell it.

Re: Halimeda Question(s)

Well, I did it.

Yuck!

It does have a smell to it. Almost like a kind of chemical smell. It wasn't as bad as Xenia... but close.

All I can say is
I'm smelling stuff I pull out of the tank.

Re: Halimeda Question(s)

Halimedia is a calcium sucking macroalgae...If you have a bumper crop, (like I did once upon a time) it will be a real draw on your system's calcium...

Re: Halimeda Question(s)

Thanks everyone!! Bwlr once you start to sniff its all down hill lol. BoomerD that is helpfull and explains yet another mystery , yes my calcium does deplete quickly for the very few corals I have, thought I could fill out the tank a bit if I let it grow. Steve
