| Midas Blenny | help-new light /water temp 90 i got a new 250 metal halide to go with my 2- 175 metal halides ..i got a new carpet anemone and thought i might need the extra light although my tank has been doing great up till now.. i added the 250 in the center of my canapy and noticed when i came home today the corals wernt opening..when i checked the temp it was at 90 and my shrimp was dead..bummer i was running my 2 175 ..1 from 10am to 9pm and the other from 12pm till 11pm.. the 250 was running from 1pm till 7pm .. oviously this isnt gonna work..i bought a fan to run during light on hours which should help a bit with keeping the temp down..it is shooting air acroos the top of the water..will this be enough>?? but need advice on how and what hours will get enough light without raising the temp too much..i was thinking of staggering the light with only 2 on at all times..what do you all think..give me some advise im not sure what to do, nevver had a temp problem before..ty |

| Hey!Its not my fault ![]() | Re: help-new light /water temp 90 What size tank do you have? I think your light period is to long.. first do you have any supplement lights like pc or VHO(actinics)? From reading peoples post on here in the past the average light spans for MH was around 6-7 hours + the use of actinics.... The MH is used to mock the sun in the real world. The sun still isnt out at 9-11 Pm like you used.... Im not bashin ya just using it as an example..... I would hmm just an idea 1. light 1 on at 10 am off at 4 pm 2 light 2 on at 12 noon off at 5 pm 3 light 3 on at 2 pm off at 7-8 ish.. I would also try to get some actinics and maybe even reduce the MHs more to 6-7 hours of MH a day..

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: help-new light /water temp 90 Use fans! Canopy fans, sump fans and main tank fans. Blowing air through the canopy will help keep the hot air away from the water's surface; blowing air across the water's surface will effectively cool the water's temp but you may need a chiller. I agree with Blue_eyes, you could reduce the amount of MH photoperiod to a total of 6-8 hrs per day and use actinics the rest of the day (that is what I do). Also, whenever you increase the PAR (in your case adding a 250 watt bulb) you should ALWAYS begin the photoperiod very short and increase it over a period of several weeks. Corals need time to adjust to the stronger light... they can get burned.
