| Tunicate | Mud sump Hi, my husband is starting a new 170 gal tank with a 100 gal mud sump for me. Is it ok to take maybe a third of the mud from my 50 gal mud sump and use it like a sourdough starter? How long would it take for it to cycle? Thanks |

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: Mud sump I don't know much about 'mud' but I would think you could use part of it to seed the new sump just as you could sand? The cycle time would depend on the amount of cured live rock you used. I would expect a 6 week cycle time but test often to watch the ammonia, trItes, trAtes levels to know for sure. Ohhh.. also use grocery store shrimp in a mess bag to cycle the tank instead of live fish ![]()

| Credit: SETI archive ![]() | Re: Mud sump I am a mud person from the past. I would not use old mud. better to start fresh and let it run its corse. You could be adding some pretty bad stuff to the system. Ever try mineral mud? Stuff is great and the macro grow really well in it. |
