Re: Reefkeeping Dangers

I was working in tank maintenance and had a tank of death where almost anything I put in wasted away and died.I kept telling the tank's owner that he had to feed the fish and he assured me he did.Soon after I developed a bump on my right hand.It grew progressively larger and when it turned red I went to the hospital. They lanced it and put me on Augmentin.I cleaned it out a few times and it started to heal.I was talking to a friend in the biz and he noticed the healing wound. He had seen a confirmed case some years back and said that while he wasn't a doctor......anyway he said to keep an eye out for another lesion as gram neg bacteria don't respond to Augmentin.Sure enough another lesion appeared about 5 wks later.I lanced it myself, and obtained a bottle of Minocycline from a pharmacist friend.6 weeks of treatment and no more lesions for over a year now. When I get around to it I will put pics in my computer and show you all.

Re: Reefkeeping Dangers

A lot of new people on RS and I just kind of wondered how many just passed over this post because it was old and didn't seem too important, sooo I decided to give it a little bit of attention by posting on it so that maybe those who are not aware of the dangers would read this. All kind of scary, kinda glad I wear gloves, as much as I hate them.

Re: Reefkeeping Dangers

I really think if there is a way to make this post always visible and available it should be at least attempted just for the information on it that could actually save someone's life if read, at least if it is always visible, it may be read because some people, beginners particularly, are not aware of the dangers of some fish and corals ..so here is a another friendly little

Excellent point. Those people with unknown sensetivity to the toxins are at a much higher risk for anaphylactic shock.

Re: Reefkeeping Dangers

Oh, holy cow and her mother.

I have zoos and just read the section on palytoxin. Thought I went over the reefkeeping danger parts, but I missed that somehow.

I a. don't wear gloves b. recently glued a peice of zoo to a rock c. have eczema d. which has cropped up again on my hands where it usually comes up (stress, too much coffee, sweating, the moon in Taurus, salt water...)

and am now stressing a little as I just last week blew off my annual dermatology check (I'm very moley and freckly and weird-things-on-my-skin-y and my grandfather has had numerous melanomas removed).
