Re: Reefkeeping Dangers

This may sound really weird but Ive had it happen to me a few times. Ive been in the hobby for five years and sometimes like after feeding the fish or having my hand in the tank for a brief time. I will wash my hands and probably within 5-10 minutes my right eye will start to swell. Im not kidding here. The first time it happened I though I got SW in my eye so I blew it off and a few weeks later it happened again and I know I didnt get Sw in my eye.I went to the DR actually right away and they said I am allergic to something in the tank. I have know idea of course what it would be. I dont even have to touch my eye and it swells. Does anybody else have this happen? or am I just one of the weird ones. I put allergy drops in my eyes when this happens and it will stop swelling within an hour. Thats what I look like sometimes.

Had a brush with my Euphyllia ancora, it got the best of me
I've had anemones wrap around my hands and I've touched soo many different corals with no problems but my Ancora kicks my butt

Robert... the same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago. My euphyllia fired up my wrist! The rash is almost gone now. It reminded me of poison ivy rash... very itchy!!

Re: Reefkeeping Dangers

the scary part is even without touching a coral, you could develop an anaphylactic reaction or infection from a small cut on your hand... just ordered my extra long gloves last week .

My point exactly, just not worth the risk IMO and less body oils in the tank!

Re: Reefkeeping Dangers

Get some Bag Balm Robert it's miracle stuff. An antihistimine won't hurt either.

Smile Re: Reefkeeping Dangers

Hi,
I am constantly putting my hands in the water to brush off my rocks. This is why I think I need a better filter. I have a marine eclipse with one bio-wheel and a sea clone skimmer. I added a small odyssea underwater pump and another filter from wal-mart for a 10-20. Any recommendations

I also end up putting my hands in the tank to feed my new anemone, bubble I think. For a while he kept shrinking up so I would give him a piece of shrimp and of course Nemo kept stealing it. What's the best way to feed this anemone? Is there a way to feed it w/o putting my hands in the tank?

I always rinsed off my hands sometimes with soap now always.

Thanks
BikiniBottom

Re: Reefkeeping Dangers

It's always best to wear gloves when putting your hand in any aquarium. There are bacteria that are commutable to human beings. One being Mycobacterium marineii. See this link for gloves.

http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewIt...roduct=ES09505

One way to feed your anemone, if you must, is use a wooden shish kabob skewer (buy at any grocery store) and place your piece of shrimp on the end. The anemone will take it right off the stick. You should not over feed your anemone. 1/2 to 1/4 piece of shrimp per week. Has your anemone moved since you placed it in the tank?

Re: Reefkeeping Dangers

I have personal experience with a mycobacterium infection, and if you think the pictures you showed are gruesome you should see the ones I took of my forearm right after I lanced and debrided it.It looks like an open bullet wound.

Welcome to Reef Sanctuary SubRosa! Sorry for your mycobacterium infection Would you care to elaborate how your arm became infected? Has it healed completely?
