Kenya tree coral again

Kenya tree -Is it a nuisance? A local former saltwater aquarist is breaking down his tank and selling all his live rock (I need about 30lbs). He says is full of Kenya tree coral. I have no other corals in my tank. WIll this stuff spread like a weed in the tank? Should I avoid it? Otherwise $2/lb for the live rock sounds good.

Re: Kenya tree coral

well Kenya trees can spread like weed (under the right conditions). What they do is as they grow they drop branches, and as those branches latch on to live rock and grow they drop more branches, and on and on. if they aren't controled they can take over a tank but depending on how fast they drop branches depends on how fast they take over a tank

Re: Kenya tree coral

well i must say my reef is overgrown with kenya but it fills the voids where i dont have the $$$$ to fill with other corals

it is aggresive to some corals in my experiences

a good way to control it is to super glue the fallen off branches to small rocks

and when ur done with the coral pass it on to a friend or sell it to a store for 5 or 10 bucks off your next purchase

Re: Kenya tree coral

I recently got a frag of kenya tree from a friend and so far I love it. It attached very quickly and is also growing very quickly so perhaps it will become a nuisance some day, but I love the shape and the color so I actually doubt it. As it breaks off branches I plan to move them to new unoccupied rocks. If I run out of room I plan to either give the frags to friends or take them to the lfs. It is a really pretty coral and seems to love my tank which has relatively low light.
Just my 2 cents. I would take the deal on the rock if it were my tank.

Re: Kenya tree coral

Lynn, your kenya is a pretty green color with brown polyps. Most I've seen are the brown variety. IMO, the green is beautiful!

Re: Kenya tree coral

You know I love mine.
It has quickly become one of my favorites.
I didn't know there were different colors though. I love the green.
