| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | For any of you out there with carpet anemones and are thinking about getting saddleback clowns (AMPHIPRION POLYMNUS), BEWARE... For the past week, I have been trying to catch my pair by feeding only in a trap. It will not be long now... they're getting very hungry. When I first added the cute little pair, I was so excited to have clowns hosting in my blue haddoni! I took lots of pics and danced around the room~ BUT then the anemone began shrinking... and shrinking... What once was a beautiful 16+ inch blue anemone has now become a a 3-4" animall that is doing its best to hide in a rock crevice. Over the last week or two, the decline has been fast. The anemone's tenticles & its color still looks great but it is very apparent that the clowns are annoying it to death. They are a very active pair and are extremely entertaining to watch but their constant darting in and out of its mouth (which is a tight squeeze) must be too much for their host. The clowns have grown tremendously fast and at this rate they'll be 6" in a few months... easily...I will take them to the LFS as soon as I catch them. HOpefully the haddoni will recover. Yes, my water parameters are good. |

| Reef Sanctuary's Mr. Wizard ![]() | Re: *WARNING - haddoni/polymnus* Woody Do not race off to the LFS yet. Are you aware that anemones do water changes ? In carpets almost 95-98 % of their size is due to inflation via water. It is common for anemones to due this. Often many people assume they are sick or are dieing, which is often not the case. However, I will say that two weeks is to long. Usually, this process is a coulpe of days or so and the clowns may have slowed it down. Your anemone is one of two host anemones for this fish.

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: *WARNING - haddoni/polymnus* Thanks for chiming in Boomer. I wish it was simply doing a water change. I've had the anemone well over a year now and it usually deflates down to around 10" during the night but would quickly inflate in the morning. It has never shrunk this small nor has it ever missed a day being fully inflated. ![]()

| Reef Sanctuary's Mr. Wizard ![]() | Re: *WARNING - haddoni/polymnus* So it was doing only partial water changes not a full one. I have seen them shrink to the size of a 50 cent piece. Two or three days or so and they are normal again. I will also add, that a year, Sorry is not a good indication of any carpet. It is often that after a year or so they parish. I have seen carpets live under poor conditons for almost a year or so ( one of mine 20 years ago). Two or more years tells you if you are really successful with with carpets or not.

| Reef Sanctuary's Mr. Wizard ![]() | Re: *WARNING - haddoni/polymnus* Yes, as clowns DO NOT like this and often get overexcited, poking and prodding the anemone to reinfllate. It is a behavioral issue, where they see their "house" disappearing. This can actually may/cause problems for anemones in captivity, where they are better off without clowns. edit Cant' see to hit the right keys today may typo's ![]()

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: *WARNING - haddoni/polymnus* Thanks~ I've never had issues with my occellaris pair I had for over 5 yrs that were hosted by an RBTA... and my current perculla pair are gentle to the euphyllia colony they live in. But these polymnus clowns (although extremely fun to watch) are VERY rough and apparently grow very quickly. I just looked, I've had the haddoni for a bit over 16 months now...

| Reef Sanctuary's Mr. Wizard ![]() | Re: *WARNING - haddoni/polymnus* May be true but these are new clowns and the there is the issue all species are not the same and then there is the issue a pair or individual may be more aggressive or ruff that others of the same species. Countless times I have seen what I stated above. 16 months is better than many for this species....me I would wait a couple of more days
