Re: overflow

Well, that was some of the best info I've read yet on overflows. I've been needing that. Haven't bought an overflow yet, but no I know a little more about how to make it work. First thing I read on this forum and wow!

I have a small suggestion, don't know if it would work, obviously.
About the bubble collection. Could you drill a hole at the very top of the u tube, glue in a small section of air hose, glue on a valve to keep it closed nice and tight. The air would go into this hose, you could see it, know it needs to be "burped" and open up the valve and let flow a little water to get the air out? I don't know, it just occured to me as a possible solution to the bubble problem when I read these posts.

Re: overflow

Lots of people use plastic gutter guard mesh to make a snail guard on their overflows...

Re: overflow

Do they attach it to the top of the box? Don't suppose anyone has a picture, do they?

I'd really appreciate it! This is about the only "hole" that I didn't think of when I put this system together.

Wouldn't work. As soon as you tried to burp the air out you would lose all siphon. U tubes work best when there is enough flow through them. A very low flow and they can accumulate air. On my system I have one and it was a battle to balance out. I wanted more flow then a single tube would give so I went to a twin tube unit. After fighting bubbles in one tube or the other for a while I got a bigger pump and 2 months no bubble trapped now.

Re: overflow

I use a U tube to transfer water between the two displays on my system. We put a hole in the top of the U tube and connected a piece of airline frome the top of one of our Maxi-Jets to the hole in the U tube. It worked great until we put the MJ on a wavemaker.

Re: overflow

If you are developing air bubbles in the U tube on an overflow, your pump is too small and your flow rate too low. I had this problem with a MAG 7 on the return to my 110 gallon. Moving up to a MAG 9.5 solved the problem.
