Bio balls

G'day all,
Bio balls,do we need them, i here they are No3 magnets! in a back pack with 40kg of rock is it necessary?

I would say no! Don't need them.

They are not No3 magnets but instead No3 factories.

With sufficient rock you do not need bioballs.

replace them with lr. I did and trates dropped almost immediately.

thy are ok for the short term then switch to actually add to the problem.. exactly like UGF do. Id not even get one to begin with. Use LR instead.

We took the bio balls out a few days ago and did our water tests today and the ammonia is up at 0.5, (a water change is due) and we have 40kg LR, would this be a normal side effect of removing the bio balls?

If you removed them all at once after your tank cycled then yes an ammonia spike would be normal. I would have suggested that if you started your tank with bio balls you remove them slowly over a few weeks. You will see your tank do another cycle now as you have taken away part of the bilogical filter.
