Bubbles from my sandbed!?!

I came home tonight after being away from my tank for a day. I came home to detris taking over my fuge area and what looked to be the beginning of cyno on my chaeto.

I also noticed this film of bubblely substance on the top of my water in my fuge...

I ended of cleaning everything as best as possible, then when i went up stairs to try and fall asleep, i looked closely at my fuge...the air bubbles are coming from my sandbed...how is this possible and what is it?

all i feel like doing is running my hands through the sandbed to stop it but for some reason i feel like they would just return after a short period of time.

What is this and i can see how its going to be good so what do i need to do to get rid of it?

Thanks

Re: Bubbles from my sandbed!?!

My fuge does the same thing, It is probably because there isnt much flow going through. I Usually take a net and skim the top of the Fuge.. Of course you dont wanna pump up the flow because that will deplete the purpose of slow flow so the critters/ copepods can stay in there to breed. Scoop out the top part of it when it accumulates there..

DONT stir the sand .. I have the same bubbles and it is prob gas bubbles. All normal and your sand sifter will help stir that up some. You dont wanna stir your sand bed all at once though. Do you have sand sifters?..

Re: Bubbles from my sandbed!?!

i would remove the slime algae if it is growing the main tank.
if it is only in the fuge let it go and maybe run the light a little longer and plan to do a water change and rub the red slime off the of the cheato
again try not to disturb the fuge to muhc when clean the cheato

Re: Bubbles from my sandbed!?!

Ok I read that wrong, lol I thought we was talking about normal bubbles under the sand bed,, ok than.... Use a turkey baster to blow off the cyno and when it floats to the top , scoop it out with a net...

Never stir your sand bed. Try to figure out why the cyano is starting , like over feeding, lights on to long, overstocking, nitrates, phospates, and eliminate it and the cyano will slowly disappear.

This is prob a normal cycle of a new tank.... and clean up crew might help some.

Nitrogen Gas, the end of the dentrification process can be seen exscaping the sandbed and bubble to the top of the water column. The low flow of the refugium will allow cellulose and bubbles to accumulate.

Re: Bubbles from my sandbed!?!

If the bubbles are on the top of the sand and looks like a slimy mass, when you touch them or blow using a turkey baster it floats to the top of the water column.. yeah it prob the start of cyano.

How big is the fuge? It is prob settling in the fuge because of low flow, But you need low flow in there. Just try to scoop out as much as possible daily. It will prob slowly go away. It may start to show up in the main tank as well. Monitor feedings and make sure food is being eaten.

If the bubbles are under the top layer of the sand and maybe water motion or critters are losening them that is normal. and nothing to worry about....

Re: Bubbles from my sandbed!?!

the bubbles are clearly on the top of my sandbed in my fuge...when theyr rise to the surface they create a bubbly film on the surface...they also seem to have a reddish tint to them...my fuge is 12x20 with 300 gph running through it.

i just setup my fuge/sump setup i have a chronicle and my fuge will cover its self in detris and these bubbles over night but i dont have any problums in my main tank as of right now...

should i get a critter to roam around on my sand bed in my fuge or not needed?

Re: Bubbles from my sandbed!?!

A half dozen will be more efficient. They are subterrainian cruisers and do not need to surface as their food is in the sand bed.

Re: Bubbles from my sandbed!?!

i was also wondering...will algea go away by itself? like if you have algea on your glass...through water changes and balances throughout everything else will it go away after a while?

Re: Bubbles from my sandbed!?!

As long as you have nutrients - light, phosphates and nitrates you will have algea. Limiting P and N plus good circulation can minimize, but never eliminate algea totally.
