Re: phosphate removers

Plus water changes. Also if you feed frozen food, rinse it with r/o first. Apparently many companies use phosphates as a preservative in the food. Also test the water you are using for water changes right before you you put it in the tank. Some water and some salts have phosphates.
Sorry, not really about removing them, but figured I would pass on what I have learned about keeping them out.

Re: phosphate removers

I wouldn't trust the readings on the red sea kit.
The previous post was correct you will continue to have phosphate issues until you switch over to RO, and soaking food in ro will also help remove some phosphates. Keep in mind that as long as you are adding water to the tank that has phosphates in it, you are allowing the live rock and substrate to collect the phosphates as well. The sooner you start using RO/DI the easier off it will be for you in the long run.

Re: phosphate removers

Ditto~ Try a different po4 test kit. Also, toss some phosban media in your mixing container used for making new salt water. I keep a sock full in my 32 gal brute trash can. This will help remove any po4 PRIOR to adding it to your reef

Re: phosphate removers

I recommend using phosphate media (iron base... phosban) in all tanks where you do not want nusiance algae.

Re: phosphate removers

I don't want bad algae, but if I use these type of additives, will I also be preventing the good algae from growing as well.

Also, in your mixing can ... you fill a sock with the phosban and just toss it into the bottom of the can ? Do you measure phosban by the # of gals in your tank ?

Thanks

Bonnie

Re: phosphate removers

Using phosban has not inhibited the growth of my cheatomorpha algae in my sump.

I would follow the directions.
