Re: Crabs Are Evil Society

LOL!!!! Sorry... have to laugh at this.....It is beyond me how something so fun can become so misconstrued.... Honestly, what is the issue? Fear of someone disliking crabs then going on a crab skewing rampage? Come on folks... lighten up! Surely CAES doesn't need a disclaimer....*sigh*... I like my scarlets but still believe that crabs are evil.... not possessed with a satanic spirit but most will eat anything that stays still long enough. period.

I never see my snails on the rocks , only the hermits .Seems they choose to stay on the glass . Do those of you who dont have crabs ( in your aquarium) have snails roaming the rocks ?

On a serious note, I do wish that everyone was light hearted when it came to thinking about crabs. Sadly, I don't think that many are joking when they say that crabs are evil. This is why I do have somewhat of a problem when someone labels any organism as evil. It leads to flaws in the thinking of some people. It also gives the people who think like that an excuse to do things to animals that they would not otherwise do to an animal.

Also, I truly feel that if a crab has caused problems in your tank, then it is your fault not the crabs. If you accidentally introduced the crab to your tank then I am willing to call that no fault. If you put the crab in there and then it caused problems, well, then it was you and your ignorance that caused the problem and thus commited the evil. The crabs are just innocent pawns caught up in the schemes of humans trying to play God.

Dang, I started out light hearted, and I was wanting to end that way. Now that I have thought about it, I guess it really does bother me. Crabs are not evil, and it isn't right that every time they are mentioned someone pops up and calls them evil. Usually this is followed by some suggestions for their torture and death. I guess I would rather see a "Crab-free Reef Society" or a "Crabs Don't Belong in Reefs Club" instead of them being labeled as evil.
Sorry but i kinda see it like i see fleas on my dog and just want them dead. but thats my opinion and the only thing i can see crabs being good at is either in the ocean or on the end of my fork. i say toss them back or spear them and dip them in butter.

You have the right to your opinions, why refrain from posting on the subject ? I don't get it.

Some crabs can be very destructive and must be removed particularly those big HH'ing crabs. Some people get carried away when getting a cleanup crew and will add dozens to several hundred crabs depending on tank size and since these guys are oportunistic feeders if there isn't enough algea/detritus then they will find something else. I had a Diadema setosum that grew so large I just didn't have enough food for him, guess what ? he consumed a small Trachyphyllia. I removed it and sent it off to the LFS.

Re: Crabs Are Evil Society

The crabs that hitch hike on imported LR are not US citizens. So we can legally declare them enemy's of the tank and send them to ABU CRAB prison for mistreatment and intense psycological torture. Make them expose their swimmerettes or threaten them with attack mantis shrimps.

Re: Crabs Are Evil Society

ok,,,when i said id hold my tongue (fingers) i didnt mean id stop my professing of the harm crabs cause in tanks,,,,

at first i got mad and what i thought was said.

i am that "someone" around here and on many other boards i have said "CAE", and then have that followed by what appeared that i advocate torture. this is what happens when the communication device is the typed word,,,so,,instead of replying with a chip on my shoulder,,,i waited and calmed until i saw it with rationality.

yes, i am the ringleader, and happy to be,,,if my messege has gotten as far as LFS,,,happy happy, joy and elation!! perhaps,,,just perhaps LFS', websuppliers and others will stop advocating the perposterous numbers of "required" crabs in a standard clean up crew. the fear that people will somehow run out and kill crabs due to CAE,,,i just dont see it, but if CAE can prevent the sale of oh so many animals,,,i feel the crabs lives will be saved, more so than some whacko will go out and have a crab killing spree. if they are not sold (by the hundreds of thousands) having so many die of starvation, neglect and poor shipping means (yeah,,,they are treated as second class animals in shipping) and how many animals can i save by stopping crab sales and the crabs being crabs and doing what they need to to survive,,,,they will kill to eat. they are by nature a hunter/scavenger. and if its our prize fish,,,they dont care, they dont have rationality,,they do what they do and thats that. so yes, we are at fault for putting them in there,,,but with things like 1 hermit crab per gallon-or 1 hermit per5g w/ 1 emerald per 5g...this is what rookies are being told by so-called professionals. im not a prefessional LFS person anymore,,,and even when i was,,,id never say that. one thing i am is vocal.

so,,,i dont feel im doing a disservice to the crab,,,i am a crusader for them,,,in a tank,,,they are evil,,,leave them in the wild.

as for hitchhiker crabs,,,well,,,stuff happens, they have to be evicted,,,be it to the LFS (they are only gonna feed it to some trigger or puffer after you leave) or banished to a sump. it sounds calloused but thats just the way it is. innocent victims of the hobby and i cannot see any feasible way to proctect these guys.

Re: Crabs Are Evil Society

okay...now I feel guilty for liking my crab. I agree that most crabs have an evil disposition but that is the nature of crabs. I would never put them in a reef tank or with fish....but the sump.

This big guy was a hitchhiker and was moved into my sump immediately. I have had him for about 2 years and he is the funniest thing to watch. I use him for pure entertainment.

Sorry Witty if I give you nightmares....
