Re: Crabs Are Evil Society

They are not evil IMO just scavengers who will eat anything they can get their claws on. Snails in particular are often eaten by crabs which is why I keep my reef crab free. (Well I did just break down and buy a couple of scarlets but they are known to be very reef safe.)

Re: Crabs Are Evil Society

they are evil because they eat anything and will kill your snails for fun, or just so they have something different to wear that day. i think thats the main reason. for me they belong on a dinner plate not my reef.

Hermit crabs are awsome.
They are a natural part of a reef!

Re: Crabs Are Evil Society

Ok heres my take on it...

Hermits are general peaceful unless starved. (thats when the snail killage comes in to play)

they only molt if there eating well.... when things are balanced nicely in your tank (food/feeding wise) They (the hermits) will maintain the same size for long periods of time..... Ive also noticed that they arent as active....

when the tank is full of food (tanks that get fed heavier) they will move around more and molt more often.

BUT
crabs and i mean Crabs like to big claw crabs.. are a completely diffrent story... they are just violent they "seak locate and exterminate" anything they can get there usely huge claws on.....

after i found this guy in my tank (hitched his way in) i some how cought him and chucked him in the return size of the sump.....

He lived there for a year about.... and is now pritty large.

hes geting acclamated to the qt tank right......

he will reamain in the Qt tank till i deside where to ship him 2.

I don't know, I still keep hearing about people killing people for fancy sneakers. Who are we to judge?

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

in my reef, i am the judge, jury and only executioner. no crab is going to take any of those positions away from me

in my reef, all crabs have been found guilty and sentenced to the BBQ until such time they are deamed delicious

I hate to disagree but this is not my experience at all. Everything in my house is well fed to say the least including everything in the tank which once contained hermits. (Hermits got me into this addiction so I had lots initially.) Anyway, they molted frequently as you say but they also would go after snails (in spite of many spare shells around) and even fish or anything else they could get their claws on.
They are creatures of opportunity. If they can catch it, they will eat it. Regardless of how well fed they are.

Amusingly enough I just added a few crabs back to my tanks. Scarlet hermits of course since Woodstock swears they are nice and won't kill my snails etc.

Well I agreed long ago that the crabs were just acting according to their nature but I also try my very best to keep all of my pets (including those in the tanks) very healthy and happy. I don't always succed but it is certainly my goal. If I feel I cannot properly keep an animal then I find another home for it etc.
Keep in mind I am the one who won't even squash bugs but move them outside instead.
