Good pump for CL on a 20G

hey, i need pump suggestions for a CL on a 20 gallon that's going to have SPS... i was also thinking about using 2 sea swirls. the return will be my only other flow, so this needs to be pretty big, although it is only a 20G. i'm trying to go powerheadless, so if anyone has any design suggestions, let me know.

I have a Mag5 on my 20gal, but for SPS you may want more flow, like a mag7 at least.

Re: Good pump for CL on a 20G

i've heard that mags don't do well when run not-submerged... i'm gonna run a 5 for the return, but the CL pump needs to be air cooled i think.

and i'm not sure how much turnover i need. i was lookin at GenX pumps, but i just am not sure.

Re: Good pump for CL on a 20G

For a close loop you could go as high a turnover as your setup requires, meaning the coral/inverts you want to keep will dictate the turnover you will need. Some people like the SPS with a TO of 45x or more, while softies will do ok with 15x or so.
Are you having sand in your tank?
what do you want to keep?
For the return the mag5 should be ok, you will probably end up with around 400gph or so.

Re: Good pump for CL on a 20G

i'm going to keep sps, a shrimp, and two small fish. for a 20 with a 10 gallon sump (~ half full) and a 5 gallon fuge, (maybe... not sure there's a need). what GPH would i need, ballpark? i was thinking about a DSB, but could go bb if the turnover's going to be too crazy.

Re: Good pump for CL on a 20G

I don't believe you have to have BB for the SPS, it will help in keeping nutrients low but IMO it is not a must, so if you like the look of sand go ahead and get it. Look at anywhere from 40x to 70x turnover maybe, I personally like to disrupt the water surface and with this kind of TO it is hard not to have it. The challange will be not to have water currents too strong, so I would have the following
40x = 800gph - 2 outlets
70x = 1400pgh 4 or 5 outlets

Re: Good pump for CL on a 20G

I have 3/4 on mine but I guess it depends on what the pump has. Some manufacturers recomend to go bigger on the input than on the output.
