| Reefing Addict | What Chiller do i need? Well I was hoping I wouldn't need to do this... But it seems like the warming weather is gonna cause me to buy a chiller... I love keeping my tank at around 78. But it seems like with all the lighting and fans I am going to have a tough time keeping this temp. So I am running a 210g tank with two 100g rubbermaid tanks as my sump and fuge.. My sump room temp is reaching like 74 today with outside temp 74... I think the main reason for the high basement temp is because I started running a dehumidifier down there.. So anyway : What size chiller and what brand chiller should I look at getting for all this water volume? My lighting is about 1600 watts.. If that matters! Thanks Guys - I know you will come through for me! ![]() |

| Reef Shark ![]() | Re: What Chiller do i need? It's really going to depend on how many degrees you want to drop the temperature of that much water. I found the following at Dr. Foster's and Smith: Temperature Difference from Ambient Temperature (Drop-down) Model 10°F 20°F 30°F 40°F 1/4 HP 260 gallon 130 gallon 90 gallon 70 gallon 1/3 HP 360 gallon 181 gallon 130 gallon 100 gallon 1/2 HP 550 gallon 280 gallon 200 gallon 154 gallon 3/4 HP 826 gallon 420 gallon 300 gallon 231 gallon 1 HP 1,321 gallon 672 gallon 500 gallon 370 gallon It looks like you're going to need 1/3 HP MINIMUM, and even 1/2 HP won't be overkill for that many gallons... Keep in mind, the chiller is going to add quite a bit of heat to the air wherever you place it. Many people have taken to using them in a remote location, (even outside) and live with the extra plumbing needed.
