Red Slime

Over a week ago I used a chemical called Red Slime for my aggressive Red Slime problem. The tank is now perfectly clear however, every time I attempt to run the skimmer it overflows. I have tried all kinds of adjustments and I did a 35% water change to no avail. Does anyone have advice on how to correct this problem?

Re: Red Slime

Sorry, can’t help you there. But, I have some Red Slime Remover sitting on my counter at home. I have been fighting cyno for a while now. I'm just nervous about adding chemicals to my tank. How did all your inhabitants handle the dose?

Re: Red Slime

I have never used the slime remover but i have had my skimmer go crazy with other products... I usually run some carbon in my skimmer/or a diff. filter and adjust the flow on the skimmer as very slow or slower than usual. HAve you had the skimmer off the whole week? or did it just start to go crazy? Try adjusting the skimmer to see if you can get the skimate to slow down... Someone may chime in here and maybe alot of skimmate is what it needs to do to get the slime remover out of the tank.

Alot of skimmate is not always a bad thing. Just make sure you have some new saltwater made to add back to the tank.

Good luck.

Re: Red Slime

Let the skimmer skim... and skim.. and skim... and skim.... it is doing its job. It will calm down in a few days. Install an overflow on the skimmer's collection cup then it can drain into a large container (mine drains into a gallon jug). Keep a check on your salinity when the skimmer goes nuts like that...

Re: Red Slime

Well, I added the RedSlimeRemover when I got home from work today. Boy-0-boy is my skimmer going nuts! The cup is full every 10 minutes. It is a good thing that I did it when I got home and over the weekend. That is one thing I have definately learned, don't do anything new to your tank if your not going to be around for a while!
I better run out and pick up more water!

Re: Red Slime

while running the RSR turn your skimmer off,,,,you want it in the tank to work,,,not sucked out by the skimmer.

Re: Red Slime

does the red slime work?

i was redoing/modding a couple of my powerheads this week, and got some developing in low flow areas... do you think it'll go away once i put the pumps back? or should i do a treatment too? i tried the basting/letting it float up, then skimming, but that didn't do much.

Re: Red Slime

yes RSR works great. As Witty suggested, keep the skimmer off but only until the red slime is gone; then crank it back up and be ready to empty the skimmate cup often!! I suggest installing an overflow to the cup

Great! I put the RSR in around 5pm last night and emptied the skimmer roughly every 20 minutes until reading this mornings post and unplugging it
I guess I'll see what good it did before adding more. The directions instruct waiting 48hrs before repeating the dose. Geez! Thanks guys....

Re: Red Slime

My GSP didn't particularly care for the chemical. Only about every third polyp is out

Re: Red Slime

The Red Slime Remover worked like magic. I added the carbon yesterday and was able to run the skimmer a few hours. It is back to filling the over flow with water very quickly. I've tried every adjustment. I just want to be clear on this. Run the skimmer and just keep emptying and adding water? I will think twice before adding any chemical to my tank, very frustrated.

Re: Red Slime

Don't be frustrated. I would be more concerned if your skimmer was NOT producing skimmate. Just keep emptying the cup... you can add an overflow to the cup ....

To use this, drill a whole in the side of your skimmer cup and then thread this fitting in. You may want to apply little bit of silicon sealant to insure that it is water tight. You will need to obtain a length of 1/2 ID hose to attach to the barbed side of this fitting to route the drain to your collection container.

Re: Red Slime

Most of these chemicals suggest that you run them for about 48 hours without the skimmer and usually with an airstone. Then do about a 1/3 water change, turn the skimmer on and then keep an eye on the collection cup.
