Re: Life of a RO membrane

There are several factors that can shorten/lengthen lifespan.
Flushing the membrane helps to lengthen the amount of use.

I know that different chemicals running through them can shorten their use.
We know when ours is turning bad when we check the TDS reading going into the membrane then again coming out.
You really want to see a 90% rejection on the water coming out.

As far as giving you an estimate on the amount of gallons, I really don't know the answer for that.

Re: Life of a RO membrane

Depending on the membrane, clorine/chloramines could damage it. Also, excessive heat will too.

The life of the membrane depends on your incoming water quality and the type of prefilters you have installed.

The RO membrane is designed to reduce mineral content by up to 98%. Membrane longevity depends on what type of water is being fed to the RO, preferrably soft water. Four to five years is not unusual life for the membrane. Membrane performance can be checked by using a TDS meter to test for rejection performance.

Quote:
The longevity of a reverse osmosis membrane greatly depends on feed water conditions, how well the system is maintained and whether the supply is municipal or well water. On most municipal water supplies, the average useful life of a Reverse Osmosis membrane is 2 to 4 years. In well water applications, reverse osmosis life may be reduced due to varied water conditions.

Re: Life of a RO membrane

The most common cause of membrane failure I run across is folks leaving the carbon prefilter in beyond its useful life, and thereby exposing the membrane to chlorine.
