Mixing corals?

I'm not ready to add any yet, but looking ahead. I know corals attack each other both through toxins and stinging cells. Aside from providing adequate space between individuals, are there any corals that should absolutely not be kept in the same tank together? I am eventually looking to begin with something like polyps, mushrooms, but like the colt corals as well, which from what I read is a good beginner coral. Also, is it okay to mix soft, LPS, SPS corals in the same tank?

I have LPS SPS softies including leathers Polyps and have had several Anemones. IME placement is the key ! And you must take into consideration that your Corals will grow and you must give them some room.
This is an example of what happens when you don't take this into consideration.

09-16-2004 The Frogspawn was small so I put some rics and mushrooms a few inches away and below FS. Since then it has severaly damaged some Mushrooms and Ricordias.

Re: Mixing corals?

When considering which corals to put in your tank a recent trend or maybe not so recent is a "natural display" i.e. corals that would be found in the same range of a reef and depth that would naturally occur together. My next tank I plan on being much more complusive about coral selection and placement in that I have genuses that would occur in the same setting in a specific region of the world such as the south pacific.

Re: Mixing corals?

That is a nice frogspawn.
I really like a mixed look myself, a little bit of everything if possible. At this time I only have a 20gal so I am limited on space but as soon as I can...

Re: Mixing corals?

If you're mixing softies with LPS/SPS, it's a good idea to run activated carbon periodically, to help remove the toxins from the water.

And, as mentioned, placement will be key.

Mushrooms don't really mix well with anything long-term... they'll overgrow just about anything in their way.

Re: Mixing corals?

Softies, using the toxins Travis mentioned as chemical warfare, shouls be placed down flow from LPS/SPS corals.

In general we overcrowd our tanks and don't leave enough room for growth. I've seen frogspwans and euphyllias, anchoe corals, as big as basketballs. Not very many tanks can accomodate that size of coral.

This hobby presents great opportunities for fragging/propogation/aquaculture which can releave some of the pressure on the natural reefs.
