Unhappy Tregedy at a local LFS

I stopped by a fish store I've been going to for years about a month ago. It is a private owned store, run by a husband and wife. Anyway, they have had a 300 gallon reef display tank set up for 16 years. This thing is immaculate. Well.....it was. The owner was away for a few days, and while he was away, someone cleaned a section of carpet close to the tank with some sort of carpet cleaner chemical. I didn't catch the brand name of the cleaner, but long story short, the tank is wiped out. The basketball sized anenmome that has been in there as long as I've been going there and several different corals, all dead. The only thing that survived was a Clarks anenome fish(clown), a very large one.
Obviously a protein skimmer draws in outside air. I would assume that the fumes from the cleaner got into the water and killed everything. It would be hard to start over after something like that.

Re: Tregedy at a local LFS

Wow , that would be terrible. You wouldnt think that would make that much difference. I wonder if something else didnt happen. I mean I know air fresheners and anything in the home air affects it some. But who all cleans there carpets...? I do.... I use air fresheners , candles, pledge. we have painted in the same room as the tank... Makes ya wonder.

BIG BUMMER!!!
I suspect that there was more than carpet cleaner OUTSIDE the tank tho.
(I'm cynical like that)

Re: Tregedy at a local LFS

From what I understand, he didn't hire anyone to clean the carpets. One of his employees did it. He says that is the only thing he knows that was done around the tank. What I have to wonder is if the employee was cleaning other stuff around the store, and the carpets, and put his/her hands in the tank with the chemicals on them. Either way, it's got me scared half to death. My tank is just 6 weeks old, but my wife is wanting to clean the carpets and I am wondering how safe it is now. I guess I could just turn off the skimmer and cover the tank with something just to be safe. Everybody cleans carpets and everthing in the rooms with their tanks. I never would have worried about but for this.

Re: Tregedy at a local LFS

Make sure the room is well ventilated. I always put a box fan on the window sill and blow the air outside to be safe. Turning off the skimmer and covering the tape are good safety measures. Using non-caustic/toxic cleaners would alkso provide a measure of safety, ie, never use bleach.

What you want to do is wait untill you get some warm weather, and can open every window in the place.

All the other stuff mentioned are all good ideas.
