Re: copperbanded butterfly

well iwork late hours at ups so the only i time i have to set a qt tank is on the weekends but i dont think he will make it that long not looking good. When i came home from work today he was just staying in the top corner of the tank not even picking at the rocks anymore. the lfs said he came in on thursday of last week so that means he hasnt eaten in a week dont think he will last much longer. I would think he would get hungry and eat SOMETHING. I held food in my hand(clam, blood worms ) put it basically in his mouth but nothing. Its enevitable isnt it he wont survive! I'm frustated but i guess i deserve it for not seeing him eat at the lfs. Then not having a qt tank. I would have sworn he would have eaten by now. All the books i have been reading say that they will learn from bolder fish but thats not happening either. I dont know what to do i dont want him to die!!!!!!

Re: copperbanded butterfly

I am sorry to hear that. I want one so bad I can hardly stand myself, but to this point, I have not been able to bring myself to get one for this reason. I hate that you are having this trouble.

Re: copperbanded butterfly

It is imperative that a CBB (or any fish for that matter) shows a healthy appetite BEFORE buying it from the LFS. I have bought 2 CBB's, both of which were eating at the lfs and both did very well in my aquarium eating my homemade mush like pigs!

IMO, quarantining is very stressfull on CBB. In the 2+ years I had mine, I quarantined it twice; both times it stopped eating. I knew it was stressful but I had no alternative since I was treating it with medicine. If you try to quarantine a CBB in order to get it to eat, I would suggest a large tank of atleast 20 gal, low lights, and lots of hiding places. I would also suggest covering the back and possibly the 2 sides of the QT to eliminate outside activity.... I used black plastic trash bag for all but the front of my QT. THat way I could peak in if needed.

...also... don't be too shy to ask the LFS to feed a fish you are interested in buying!! They shouldn't mind at all... mine never have... and if they are reluctant to do so, shop elswhere!!

i second that good advice if they dont care enough about the well being of the animals they sell to drop in a lil food then your better off elsewhere

and you will definitly have better luck getting him to eat frozen food out of the display because as long as he can graze the rocks for his natural foods he willand in qt tank the food will stay in the water column longer so he has more of a chance to check it out

good luck they are great fish

Re: copperbanded butterfly

i'm sorry to tell you all that he passed on! when i left for work this am he was pretty much done and when i came home it was over. I would like to thamk all of you for your concern and advice. I'm so bummed out i want desperately to keep on e of these fish. Maybe i could talk to peole like woodstock or any body else with experience keeping a cbb so i could better prepare myself and my set up for the next time i buy one. I will not abandon my desire to keep one of these fish but want to do it right next time so to not waste a perfectly good fish. Thanks -Dave-

Re: copperbanded butterfly

CK, it wasn't eating in the 1st place right? If it had a chance at all, where would it be? In some tiny box filled with lousy water at the LFS or in your bigger tank getting personal care. You gave it the best chance it had.

Re: copperbanded butterfly

I've had a few CBB's and IME they are very sensitive fish. My last 2 were eating out of my hand and eventually died, although one was because he liked to sleep next to my Seio ph.
The problem with these fish is that they don't ship well and will often go on hunger strikes, just refuse to eat no matter what you feed, believe I tried everything, add that to the fact that they come from areas that commonly use cyanide so they're usually doomed.

In a perfect world, fish stores would not allow the sell of any sick fish... especially one that wasn't eating. But we all know that isn't the case. Thank goodness for forums like RS that are here to educate the unknowing. I would like to think that with the knowledge we have shared with reefers here has saved many marine critters from certain death. Chalk the loss as learned experience and be more careful next time.

Remember, the worse mistake made is one that is repeated~
