U.S. May Remove Humpbacks From List of Endangered Species

Finally! Some happy news provided by Jeremy.

The U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service may remove the humpback whale from its list of endangered species, citing evidence that the species has rebounded from near extinction. Since an international ban on their whaling in 1966, populations of the north Pacific humpback have increased about 4.7 percent each year, researchers say.

Re: U.S. May Remove Humpbacks From List of Endangered Species

the manatee is on the rebound since boaters decided to stop running them over as well. i think it might already be off the list though.

good news frankie!

Re: U.S. May Remove Humpbacks From List of Endangered Species

The boaters for manatees were only part of the problem though. Now, with the slight increase in sea temp, they are tending to stay north a little longer, and then when it actually does cool down they suffer from "cold stress syndrome", which drops the immune system leaving them vulnerable to a number of diseases and infections. They have been having them wash up as far north as Maine I believe.

We actually just did a Manatee Necropsy a few days ago on one that washed up a while back for the Marine Mammal Strandings Program down here, it was pretty interesting.

I think they should stay on the list and every other whale too, The Japanese slaughter of whales should also be illegal...

Re: U.S. May Remove Humpbacks From List of Endangered Species

I agree. It is nice to know they are recovering but it would be better to protect them just that much more keeping them on the list.

Re: U.S. May Remove Humpbacks From List of Endangered Species

Also, who's to say they are still not endangered even if there population growth has grown? Another problem they will face now is the dwindling food resources such as there main diet of krill. Krill has been on the decline for some time now due to global warming.
So great, the whales are coming back but now we will start to see more and more of them dieing in the winters due to malnutrition and short fat reserves.
