Virginia shark's pup a 'virgin birth'

A blacktip shark, Carcharhinus limbatus, is shown in this March 2008 file photo in the Indian Ocean off Aliwal Shoal, South Africa. Scientists have confirmed the second case of a 'virgin birth' in a shark. In a report in The Journal of Fish Biology, scientists said DNA testing proved that a pup carried by a female Atlantic blacktip shark in the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center contained no genetic material from a male.

That's Mother Nature trying to help one species (Carcharhinus limbatus) over-come some of the problems another species (Homo sapiens ) have caused. GO Mother Nature

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Virginia shark's pup a 'virgin birth'

We just learned about that in vertebrate zoology. Unfortunately that's a last ditch effort to spread their genes. I thought the new pup would be sterile, no?

Re: Virginia shark's pup a 'virgin birth'

hmm I just got a glimpse of an article on it. Saying its the second time known that a shark has had a-sexual reproduction I think the other was a hammerhead.

Re: Virginia shark's pup a 'virgin birth'

Yeah they've recorded parthenogenesis with a hammerhead too. There's a report about it in Biology Letters: Chapman et al. 2007. Virgin Birth in a Hammerhead Shark. Biology Letters. 3: 425-427.
