650 Million Year-Old Reef Discovered in Australia’s Outback

Yet another fine article provided by Bax. Thanks for your support of the news

Scientists at the University of Melbourne have discovered the relics of a 650 million year-old reef in the Australian Outback. The reef is 10 times higher than the modern Great Barrier Reef and predates the evolution of animal life by at least 40 million years. It could also offer valuable information about climate change.

Wit I heard he was responsible for the first Ammonia spike on that reef....

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

So they are saying it is not built out of corals but layers of non-living stromatolite. Click on this link if you would like to learn more about stromatolites http://www.home.duq.edu/~stolz/RIBS/publ/Brochure2.pdf

I'm going to argue that carbon dating is highly in accurate and say that reef is nowhere near 650 million years old, but the information is great non the less.

It is only inaccurate because of the 650 million years, and aquatic life. It is not highly inaccurate when used in a 50,000 year time frame on non-aquatic-life.

that being said... I am sure they didn't use carbon dating in the first place and I am sure the scientist have more information to base the age of the reef than what is put in the article, or they would not have come up with that age.

I don't doubt that it is that old.. what makes you think it isn't?

It go's against a certain belief system Brenda. Like Genesis to begin with. Unfortunately, ( or fortunately) that is a topic we won't discuss here on RS.
In defense of the article there is no mention of carbon dating.

Re: 650 Million Year-Old Reef Discovered in Australia’s Outback

Wow thats so cool! It reminds me of when I was watching the discovery channel and there was some science guy on there in the Sahara desert talking about how where he was used to be under water and he is just walkin' along and then bends over and picks up what looks like a rock to me and says, "well this here is the fossil of a sea turtle shell." My jaw almost hit the floor, i couldn't believe this guy was waling around a desert finding remnants of ocean life.
