Coral reefs may grow with global warming

Rising levels of greenhouse gases may not be quite as bad for coral reefs as was previously thought. A team of Australian scientists say that the damage done by increasing amounts of carbon dioxide in the oceans will be offset by warmer waters, which will make coral grow faster. But other researchers counter that warming will do more harm than good. Coral reefs may grow with global warming - 13 December 2004 - New Scientist

Re: Coral reefs may grow with global warming

Here is an article that was really good. It talks about climate change and coral reefs and also about the synergistic effects of overfishing, pollution, and the aquarium trade...

They say that reefs may have the ability to adapt to climate change, but all of the added stresses can substantially weaken or destroy that ability.

They also talk about temperature thresholds and bleaching events...

So are the reefs doomed or not doomed?
My head hurts.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Re: Coral reefs may grow with global warming

Reef conditions will get a lot worse before they ever get any better as capitalism out trumps ecology and environmentalists the majority of the time. We will be lucky if the reefs even have what little chances that the whales have which is possibly too little too late to ever rebuild to any number near what they were before we almost hunted them to extinction. After all how many reef keepers are still buying wild harvested corals regularly be cause they are cheaper or more readily available (impulse buying at the LFS)than aqua cultured corals. How many reefers have limited themselves to just buying aqua cultured marine fish or invertebrates other than corals. Capitalism breeds selfish, self centered people who want what they want when they want it. Just as we would be driving cars that get only 5 miles to the gallon if OPEC sold us oil cheaply like they did before the first oil embargo, we will continue to exploit the reefs in third world countries as long as those countries are foolish enough to allow it. We protect the reefs in U.S. waters and the waters of our territories and exploit all others we are allowed to by those countries who have control over them. It is another one of those penny on the dollar exploitations this country is famous for.

Re: Coral reefs may grow with global warming

Spoken like a true patriot
Back to the topic though, Do we really know what causes global warming and are we truly responsible for it? Will global warming hurt the reefs or not? I personally think it will and there is nothing we can do about it.
I have to admit, I have no doubt we are contributing to some form of harm to the planet we live on with all the pollution we do but i will not believe we are so powerful as that to bring on a new ice age. The planet go's through cycles. It has been going on for a very long time and will keep going on no matter what we do here.
Look at that article i posted last week. After setting off a nuke the reef there has bounced back stronger then ever. Lets also not underestimate the power of nature. It is a very resilient force.

Re: Coral reefs may grow with global warming

We humans are deterraforming the earth at this very moment and going it at an undeniably fast rate. Between carbon dioxide from massive carbon fossil fuel usage and methane from cattle and other ruminants and sewage decomposition we are causing global warming and our ocean is taking up massive amounts of carbon dioxide that is already affecting the oceans systems and it will do nothing but get worse. The country producing the majority of the carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases is the United States. However, China last year is actually reported to be the first country to have actually exceeded the U.S. in production of carbon dioxide in any single year. They accomplished this through their production of massive amounts of Portland cement which releases extremely large amounts of carbon dioxide when it is oven fired during production.
It is reported that this year will likely be the first time in recorded history that the north pole will be ice free. The Northwest passage was actually open to shipping during this past winter, which has never happened before in recorded history.
We will have to change we do things world wide or we will cause enough damage to make this planet uninhabitable, it is just a matter of how long it will take if we do not change, there is no argument that it will not happen if we do not change. It will, so we must!!!!.
The commercial of the guy stepping out of the way and leaving the child standing on the railroad tracks as the train approaches is a fine example of the greed and selfishness that is preventing the changes we need to stop or at least slow the process. What did the man say, "not in my time so why should I worry."
Pessimistic as it sound, if I was a young person now I would not bring children into this world.
Thinking that mother nature will take care of us and this planet is akin to thinking the price of gas will return to $2 per gallon and tobacco will quit causing cancer.
