Talking my new 20g planted tank

okay i have a 20g that is set-up right now. no pics as i am on the library's computer. lighting will be 2x 15w flouresents. filtration is a aqua-clear 50. and a heater that i had laying around keeping the tank from 76-78 degrees. substrate is flourite one bag for about 2in. i will keep a cost log on this tank for people who might be intereseted in setting up. so far the cost is $70 exactly. that was bag of flourite,aqua clear 50, 8' airline tubing, and 2 airstones. already had tank heater and air pump. so that would add about $30 $50 more if you do not already have one. i still need to buy one 15w light fixture and livestock. still lokking for a piece of driftwood

Re: my new 20g planted tank

What are you using the airstones for? You kind of want to keep surface agitation at a minimum to keep co2 in. Not that big of a deal though im just anal lol.

Re: my new 20g planted tank

20g tanks retail for about $50, heaters retail for about $15 and up, and the air pump will go for about $10. So a correct cost would be about $75, not $30-50. So if someone wanted to start new, it would be $145 so far.

Plus lighting, and live stock you will be around $350.

You are right about that.Do not airrate a planted tank. DON'T! If you are think CO2 then use a diffuser, not stones.

Read the 2nd to bottom line

Drift wood dose cost people who do not live by water or don't want to risk fresh wood.

I am talking about the price for anyone else doing this;

Re: my new 20g planted tank

Always wondered why driftwood is so expensive at the lfs until I got a bunch from the mississipi and had to prep it and boil it and then soak it.....makes sense now lol. Almost worth buying it

Re: my new 20g planted tank

with the rock, put it in a bucket with vinegar. if it fizzes, it will up your PH too much and you cant use it. if it doesnt fizz, it should be fine

with driftwood, i dont know why everyone says its so expensive. its about $1/lb for mopani wood here and i got all the wood in my 90g for less than $10

Re: my new 20g planted tank

Vinegar dose not work. Get a stronger acid, do some research.
