Question Who keeps stingrays? Fresh or salt? Or has a shark?

Just curious as to who keeps Stingrays. I would LOVE to see pictures. I am thinking that we are going with a cement tank, MUCH larger than our 220 that we have. For this... (or the 220) Well, either way, One tank will be Saltwater FOWLR and the other, Stingrays.

Any input on keeping them would be great!!

Here are some tips on cutting back to keep your bills in the same range as before.

Put a timer in the bathroom, the family is now only aloud to take 5 minute showers, baths are out of the question.

Tv time is cut to 1 hour a night, we have to make up for all of the lights/pumps/heaters/chillers/etc. running

No more lights, duct tape all light switches in the off position. If someone needs light, they can sit by the tank.

Re: Who keeps stingrays? Fresh or salt? Or has a shark?

hmm...keeping stingrays in a small aquarium (by small i mean not a huge public aquarium) makes me a little nervous...
they're amazing animals though. does anyone keep them?

it seems to me that they would need a HUGE amount of space to be able to stay happy and healthy. and A LOT of swimming room, not just gallonage. do you have a saltwater swimming pool? that might work!

i don't mean to be a kill joy and i really don't know anything about keeping large species in aquariums, so i shouldn't even be talking about this probably. i really just wanted to post something so that i could follow this thread and see if anyone else had pics...but it's late and i've been studying for hours and i am now rambling. so good luck with the tanks, and goodnight!

Re: Who keeps stingrays? Fresh or salt? Or has a shark?

There was a post in one of the threads not too long ago that had a link to a fella that building a massive tank with nothing but freshwater sting rays. It was very cool! If I find it again I will post a link here.

Yea his tank was 26000 gallons. Unless you have a massive tank with lots of open space the rays should be left in the ocean.

Re: Who keeps stingrays? Fresh or salt? Or has a shark?

I have kept fresh water Rays for many years. They are wonderfully intelligent animals, quite hardy and easy to breed. One of the issues with rays is of course space and pristine water quality. Rays eat a tremendous amount of food. This makes maintaining water quality difficult. The best way I have found is a continuous drip system that is constantly changing water in the system. IMO minimum tank size would have a foot print of no less than 4 by 6 feet for a single adult Motoro ray. Here is a link that will show some of the different species of FW rays.

I feel that salties should be left in the ocean as the success rate with them is very low.
More later I need to go back to bed. Do your research first but I can tell you that FW rays are well worth the time and money involved in keeping these fascinating animals.

I have had both as a matter of fact fresno chaffy zoo has done exactly what you are thinking about with sting rays & it is a major problem. Sting ray can be kept in a aquarium in the bottom is a DSB & large enough for them to swim & grow again flow & skimming is very important

Sharks I have kept for a long time 600+ Gallon tanks are a must lots of filtration flow & massive skimmers.

I have talked with a LOT of people that have kept rays in just 220g tanks. Do you all not suggest this? ALso--In July, we will be building a 748 gallon cement tank, in hopes of keeping rays/sharks. Then using the 220 as a sump..so 968 total water volume. We will ONLY be doing this, if sharks/rays are doable...

if the cement is coated right 3-4 stingrays could live there confortably. Sharks 2 I also would not suggest aggressive sharks because the eat stingrays

Are there sharks that do not grow to...10 ft or what not? Yes I know I still have yet to do some major researching but just curious if any stay at like... 4 feet or so?
