How big would what fish be? We are thinking primarily a Ray/Shark tank with the large tank. That leaves us with the 90g Acyrlic bowfront for reefing...

Wohoo! we just might both have 90 gallons then, just maybe, and i would so get the clown trigg, but you would get the Picaso and his blue trigg. there is not many inverts you can keep though i guess. If i had a big tank like that i Would keep Moray eels!! SHarks! and stingrays. hmm ohhh a school of some sort of fish!!!

Basically as for sharks you are looking @ to stay small Eastern Pacific Horn Sharks, Port Jackson Horn Sharks, Epolet Sharks, Banned Cat Sharks Marble Sharks they get 4-5' however a 5' shark has alot of strength. In dealling with Sharks I have had my fair share of getting them out of tanks the last 2 large ones were a 5" foot nurse which was like being in a street brawl that lasted hours. & a 4' Lemmon which was like dealing with Jaws himself very vicious even out of the water.

Re: Who keeps stingrays? Fresh or salt? Or has a shark?

it just seems like it would be such a sad, aweful life for a shark or ray or moray in a tank even that large. its one thing to keep fish that have much smaller home ranges and wouldn't know the difference between a 50g aquarium and the entire ocean, but sharks and rays need room to swim and hunt. they're solitary creatures.
and its not like you'll be building massive rock caves and underwater structures for them to hide amongst and maybe have a chance to feel at home - you're not building them a reef, your putting them in a tank.

sorry, i don't mean to attack you or imply anything about people who keep these animals. i'm sure there are many who keep them successfully. its just me being a lorax...

if you do keep rays or sharks, i'd just urge you to not see how many you can "comfortably" fit in the tank, keep like one or a pair and get a cool school of something. i think that would be a much happier healthier arrangement.

Your opinion is wonderful! I like to hear when people disagree honestly, puts an insight on the "other sides view" Anyways, I would HONESTLY just like to have 2 stingrays, which I will have PLENTY of room for. My boyfriend wants a shark. Who knows what it will come to, but I do NOT plan on cramming the poor guys in. I often think of how my fish feel, and yes, I get made fun of by family, friends constantly. Even me mentioning that I want to get more hiding spots so they feel more comfortable, they look lost to as why I care.

I appreciate your opinion, Thanks!!

Re: Who keeps stingrays? Fresh or salt? Or has a shark?

that's great to hear, i think that rays would be amazing animals to keep, and two should have a great life in there. i just get nervous when people start talking about cramming in tankloads of animals that basically HAVE to be imported from reefs. every ray/shark that dies in an aquarium due to bad husbandry is one more ray/shark that could have been living a long happy life on its reef. (i'll get off of my soap box now!)

hehe, i love thinking about what fish are feeling, what would make them more comfortable too! (i even do it with my corals and shrimps, since that's basically all i have right now! )

so, a concrete aquarium. will viewing be only from the top?

Re: Who keeps stingrays? Fresh or salt? Or has a shark?

I agree that sharks and rays need the right type of person to care properly for them. Like Jack said, these are dangerous animals.
As for being cruel, you would be surprised at how many miles a yellow tang can travel in a day. or how much territory an eel has in the wild. There are times when i think i just might have to revert to small fish when my large ones die. Getting rid of them is out of the question now that i am responsible for them. It is one of the reasons i am upgrading this year.

Re: Who keeps stingrays? Fresh or salt? Or has a shark?

If you are serious about keeping sharks keep several things in mind. All of the species that AQTCJAK listed are indeed the most suitable for home keeping. But they're not "real sharks".They are called Requiem Sharks, and they lay around on the bottom like lumps until food happens. If you expect them to be what most people consider sharks you will be disappointed.Pelagic sharks require ALOT more than a couple of hundred gallons. And unless the tank is circular it really is cruelty to keep them.Consider setting up an above ground circular pool in your basement if you want to keep "real sharks".Just remember to use an EPDM pond liner as vinyl pool liners are toxic.
