Where do you get arowanas in the US?

This is how I first got into this fish thing. I know Asian Arowanas are illegal in the US but I belive South Americans and ... Austrailian?... are legal. But who sells/breeds them?

I saw one at fintastic the other day. He was silver and about 12 inches long. I also saw one at another LFS he was white and about 24 inches long.
Why are asian arrowanas illegal?

they are just on the DO NOT import list...I remember reading the F.W.C(fish/wildlife commission) here in fl, and the asians are on the list...Used to get silver arrowana's all the time in south florida....THEY ARE SUPER JUMPERS. and usually get huge so most ppl dont carry them.

Re: Where do you get arowanas in the US?

I got ours 5yr ago in nj they made me wait 4 weeks to take him due to the egg sack. He is now 2ft needs a bigger tank but we can't go any bigger we need to find him a new home but we are very picky he is in with a few lg tank mates that must stay with him , they grew up together. he only eats arowana food we don't feed live. He is beautiful .

Hey Booze

I've been surfing those for a while, and most are based overseas. There's a lot in Singapore and Malaysia, and some will export but I was hoping to find somewhere in the US that breeds or sells. Jersey is pretty harsh with its species restrictions, although I haven't checked the latest requirements. There's a lot of species you need a permit for.

Re: Where do you get arowanas in the US?

yeah, apparently.

Arowanas are on the CITES (endangered species) list... forget what it stands for but it's essentially what species are in trouble.

here we go: Convention on International Trade on Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora.

Re: Where do you get arowanas in the US?

Silver arowwanas I have seen for sale. You need a HUGE tank. They get to 4ft long. They need room to move, They don't need real deep tanks, just long ones with enough width to turn around. Think pond size tank for adults. What you hear about 200g won't due as a arowana tank, not forever. Do not get one unless you intend to take care of it. An if it gets to big for you, who will have a big enough tank? Think about it.
I love arowanas, and would highly suggest one to you if you have the resources to take are of it. I am sure you will treat him right.

Re: Where do you get arowanas in the US?

Yeah, I think it's the silvers that get that long. Generally it's said the rest get about 3 feet, and they get to a foot very quickly but then the growth slows down. Most keepers of arowanas (from what I've read) start out in smaller tanks and move up as necessary. 200 gallons seems to be OK for a while. The general rule seems to be - tank doesn't need to be high, but at LEAST the width of the fish in depth (out from teh wall) and three times as long as his length. That's the MINIMUM.

Re: Where do you get arowanas in the US?

Silver arowanas are not on the CITIES list, and the one you most commonly see for sale. I don't know individual state legislation regarding the sale of arowanas. I just know they are legal to sell here in NC.
You will also occasionally see Jardinii arowanas for sale, some places will try and call these "asian" or golden arowanas although they are not.
S. formosus is one you will not find for sale in the states.

The silver arowanas at full size would be more at home in a tank somewhere around 500 gallons. Shallow, wide and long.

Re: Where do you get arowanas in the US?

Yeah, I'd love an Asian (S. formosus) I know of one, you have to have had it before like the mid 70s or something like that.

Do you know anything about the Africans, Mike?
