Betas

I have always liked bettas. I have one when I was like 2. Everytime I have gone to the petstore I have to go see the Bettas. I want to get a small betta tank. One male and one female. I think they would be ok in a 5 gallon planted tank. I want to used the Current Powerbrite LED lighting. Will this work over a 5 gallon tank. And would I need the 10K or the 10K/Actinic. Thanks for any help.

Re: Betas

i tried to keep a female and male betta in a 10G planted, and the male betta chased the female around until she was almost dead, so i pulled the male, put him in a 1 gal and left the female to get used to the 10G, put rocks and some driftwood for hiding places, and added more plants. Then added the male again hoping the rearrange and new decor would help, but as soon as he hit the water he was after her again. I got so pissed off at him i tossed him in the tank with the arrowana. A burst of colourful scales later and i now have a peaceful female betta.

Moral: male bettas are a**holes to just about anything that moves....

Re: Betas

i dunno, i got so pissed off that i never bothered doing any research. Possibly they are not so aggressive when the females are receptive to breeding, or maybe i just got the all time jerk betta. I do have another male betta with a dwarf african frog and he chases the frog around too. He used to chase my rosy red feeders when i put a couple of them in the tank. Maybe it has something to do with being kept in a cup for who knows how long on the shelves. I'd be pretty peeved off at the world if my first few months were spent in a cup....

Re: Betas

Now you went and did it. I researched the little jerks... i mean betta's. When trying to keep betta's together, you need at least 4 females to every male, this allows the male's aggression to be split amongst all the females. betta females can be kept together without any aggression. Some sites recommend never keeping male bettas with any other bettas as they can be too agressive. When breeding betta's, the breeding female is usually placed in a glass cylinder for the first day, this is to protect her from the males overly aggressive courting which can often kill the female. They also seem to be quite picky about their mates, if they don't like the female or vice versa, they can either totally ignore each other or fight to the death.

hope this quick summary helps

Re: Betas

Yup, Zimboy's right on. It also helps to put them all together in a shallow bowl (think serving platter with sides) with some live plants in. Doesn't have to be much to look at. Remove the females after they've laid the eggs, the make is the one who cares for the eggs. The male makes a "bubble nest" at the top where the eggs sit. He will take care of the fry too.

Re: Betas

Hey Michael

check out this link:

Breeding Bettas, by Kick

great info on breeding them. I've had various experiences with breeding them and I pretty much ended up not putting males adn females together EVER except to breed. They fight too much.

Re: Betas

Now what are you hens clucking about? Breding bettas. I bet ya $5 you won't get a true opaque within the first 20 trys. Or chocolate for that matter. Reds are a good beginner strain to try, if you like purebreds. If not A blue/red combo is manageable 3 Fs from source.

Re: Betas

Well, I got the tank and the light. I am going to use LED lighting on this little tank. What Type of filtration do you use on a small planted Betta tank?

Re: Betas

You know the bettas don't need any filtration at all, I just use an airstone. They're puddle dwellers,

the plants and all, got me.

Re: Betas

whatever filtration you do go with just make sure that the flow isn't to strong. they prefer calm waters over the jets of a marine tank.
