| Bryozoan | Thanks for your notes of comfort... Actually the Oscar was my 11 year old son's pet, and he had to leave for school, crying in grief... It was really sad.We previously had 2 gals and a guy, and so DO have two more large oscar cichlids, and these two have been "jaw locking" for some time... (by the way, we have put a lid on the tank since yesterday's tradgedy.) I would really like to see them lay eggs... Does anyone have advice or experience in what I have to do to make that possible? Babies would help carry on the "spirit" of the one who jumped the garden gate, and would help ease the loss. ![]()

| Bryozoan | Re: Ode To My Oscar Good luck with breeding them. They can be rather rough with each other...it might look like they are fighting. My pair would lay eggs hours after a water change. Had to get rid of mine as they were really hard on the tank when they were mating, although they were in a 135g they were to big (14" and 12") and kept splitting the tank. Make sure you have a flat piece of slate or something flat that she can lay the eggs on, and once she has they are very protective of that area. Mine never managed to get farther then the hatching stage...mom would eat them. Good luck and let us know how it goes. |

| Manta Ray | Re: Ode To My Oscar Sorry bout the cichlid... You will need at least 100 gallons to bread. Good water quality and higher temps is important too. Plus anther larger tank to hand raise the eggs.

| Bryozoan | Re: Ode To My Oscar pemfish, I might help supply my son with a larger tank and equipment, if he wants to do a breeding project for a school science project .... Our other two Oscars are 9 inches and 10 inches, with alot of character, so my son is getting over his loss, with the other two to entertain him. He has read your condolences and was touched. He wanted to join the forum and give everyone a big dose of KARMA, but I told him he has to wait until he is 13 y/o... (forum policy) ... He also has a species tank of a red belly pirrhana 5 inches, and another species tank with a wolf fish 12 inches long. And a 55 gal salt FOWLR with a spotted grouper, dwarf fuzzy, choc. chip star, and pencil urchin... I think he's "hooked" on the hobby... so will not be too discouraged from the loss. He says if another one jumps out though, he wants to mount it and keep it for a lasting memory... It sounded crazy at first... but I have 4 kids and I do lots of crazy things...Has anyone ever mounted a fish that died of natural causes? Thanks again for your comments, chum
