Going Hypo!

Hello everyone. I have ich.
I am going to be doing the Hyposalinity treatment to cure my fish and leave the DT fallow for no less then 3 months.
I am following Lee's thread to accomplish this. A Hyposalinity Treatment Process
I will be taking pictures and giving progress reports through the whole process. Feel free to chime in with info or questions as we go. This is new to me so it will be a learning experience for sure.
For my quarantine tank I am useing a 55 gallon with a 10 gallon DIY wet dry sump. I have a few pvc tubes in it for the fish to hide in and behind. I covered half the tank with some material to provide a quiet zone. that is it. The wet dry is just a 1 gallon bucket drilled with holes in the bottom with filter pads inside. That is resting in a basket full of bio balls. The basket is on a tupperware to keep it partially out of the water. Very basic. I am keeping this tank in my office in order to have the most peacful enviroment I can provide them for the next few months.
I just fed the fish and they all are eating well even being taken from there home of the past 3 years. That is a good sign. Here are a few pictures of the setup and the baking soda I have in the oven right now for controling the ph.

How did you, or are going to, capture your fish without breaking down your reef? All the best!

Re: Going Hypo!

Thanks for stopping in Doc. My tank has been fish only for the past month or so due to a new reefscape idea I had. All the rock has been in the sump and corals in the frag tank.

I would add in your case approx. 1.5 gallons of the osmosis water, every 2.5 - 3 hours very slow to the treatment aquarium.

edit: If the salinity should have to be lowered thereafter some more, I infer in each case every 2.5 - 3 hours 1.5 gallon and supplement these by osmosis water.
Heinz, thanks for all your help in my thread and moving over here with me.
My math came out a bit different though. I came up with 1 gallon of fresh every 8 hour for 48 hours to get my 1.023 SG (now) down to 1.008. I think I might be wrong though and will be waiting for advice.

Re: Going Hypo!

Hi Frank,

as I told you before in you reef thread, substantially better compatibly with nature and for the fish than the treatment with copper, special for strongly weakened animals. I had thereby very good success and wish you the same.

edit: My computation was meant only exemplary. I am sure, you are computed the correct quantity/time relationship.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: Going Hypo!

Glad you could make it Paul. Better late then never!
Thanks for tagging along Allen and Lynn. I hope we can all learn from this.
Paul, in the link I provided Lee stated this:
Quote:
A hyposalinity treatment will kill: Pods, snails, crabs, invertebrates, corals, live rock, most marine algae, and Marine Ich.
Now my question is, can ich live on pods, snails, crabs or invertebrates. I have all of these still in my system.
as for a bit of drama, Zippy the Yellow Coris Wrasse made an appearance in the DT just a few minutes ago. I forgot all about him! He sleeps in the sand and was not easy to catch! THen I remembered the fariy wrasse. He has been in the overflow for about month now! All are accounted for except the firefish in the 75 gallon sump full of 208 lbs of rock. I will leave that for tomorrow though. I will need to pull all the rock to catch it if I can at all.

Re: Going Hypo!

Good luck with your treatment. The hyposalinity was much easier than the copper treatment, your fish should do well with it. Just remember time doesn't start until the last fish is caught! Just remember it has to sleep sometime!

Re: Going Hypo!

I tried all night to net the little bugger
I'll need to pull all the rock until I hear him. He hides in the rock so hopefully I will nab him quickly by pulling it. That is one fast fish! All the others are doing well in the quarantine. They keep peeking at me from behind the material I used to make the quiet zone. It's quite comical.
I have the salinity down to 1.020. Next change out is 5pm.
Thanks for stopping in everyone. I will keep you informed as time go's by.

Re: Going Hypo!

BTW, I am finding it very easy to maintain the PH with the baked baking soda dissolved in RODI water and dripped as recommend by Lee. Once I got it stable all I do now is keep a jar full of dissolved BS and add a table spoon full at a time to bring it up. Very simple and easy.
