Re: white things on tang

Stop feeding the brine and move on to mysis. Brine is candy, little nutritional value.

Re: white things on tang

First IMO the earlier post was in bad taste to say the least but that is only my perception. If the person you were saying it too took it as a joke then it would be perfectly logical.
Now for stuff that matters
You need to get him to start eating nori and to eat other frozen prepared foods. Almost anything is better than brine. Mysis is a good option but there are many others. I feed a mush that has many commercial fish food as well as fresh seafood. Before that I just had various cubes in the freezer and picked a package each day for variety.
You want to get him to start eating nori. If he won't take it on the clip try putting it around a rock so the fish sees it more like food. Also there are many types of nori and my tangs certainly react differently with the different colors and brands,

Agreed 100%.

As far as the 'white balls' growing on him, it could be lymphocysts or a fungal infection. Can you clean the glass and take another photo showing the white area better?

Re: white things on tang

IMO, no matter if its a viral, bacteria or fungal infection i would treat the same. most likely it was brought on by stress and poor water conditions. either your tank or more likey "shipping bag" or LFS tank. becaue it is only on the fins and not effecting the gills, mouth or swimming ability, also because the tang is eating, i would only treat with a good diet(vit/garlic soaked nutritious foods) and good water conditions-stable ph swings included. you could also lower the temp in the tank for a week or so to 76ish which decreases metobolic rates, thus, decreases O2 demands which aids in alieviating stress issues. of course slowly increase to normal levels after.

you could also lower the salinity some, to the lower end of acceptable. this will help with osmotic balances. excessive stress often results in fish becoming unalbe to maintain their osmolarity, thus, they lose fluids and electrolytes via osmatic pressures. a lower salinity will help them recover their osmotic balance. the stress and loss of osmolarity is most likely why your tang looks so slim, his dehydrated, that and not being feed so good along the way to your tank did not help. it basically helps the fish return to homeostasis.

the only reason i say no to other treaments, is becaues the medication would probably do more harm than good, right now for this fish. medication is hard on the fishs system and increases O2 demands aswell as increases metbolic rates to start with. the fish ends up using what little resourses it has to metabolize the medication, but in its weaken state no real healing or recovery going on (bug dead but fish too weak to recover now). with this fish being dehydrated and its osmolarity being off already, IMO, its best to focus on returning it back to homeostasis and reducing stressors at this time.

Re: white things on tang

Picture isn't clear enough and I would prefer to see the condition through a clean/clear tank sidewall, a little closer. From what is shown, Lymphocystis is indicated.

No known cure if it is Lymphocystis, but I’ve known the Neon Blue Goby (Elacatinus oceanops) to actually eat it off of some fishes. This is rarely fatal IF the aquarist takes positive action. This is a virus and usually hangs around the fish. Fishes that are weak or not getting the proper nutrition or are under considerable stress (or a combo of these) usually get this infection.

As Prow previously mentioned, this is a way-too-thin Tang. Review its diet and start providing enough of the right kinds of foods. Please read through this post:
Feeding Marine Fish and Marine Fish Nutrition

Ask if you have questions.
