Can fish live with ich?

I have a blue tang "Dori" and a porcupine puffer and they both have ich. Sometimes they look better than others. They have had for a while now? I have been soaking their food in garlic.

They can live..but they will eventually die.The parisite sucks their blood!

While they CAN live, it would be more of a quality of life issue.

How infected are they?

Dori has maybe three spots. The puffer its hard to tell sometime it looks like he's covered other times he looks fine.

Read up on it. I have read that a freshwater dip will help remove it off the fish, but it will not remove it from your tank.

There are medications for it, but they are harmful to corals.

Someone more read up on the issue will be along shortly.

Yes a fresh water dip and will really help. How big are your fish? A 55 gallon is really on the small side for those fish and could be a source of stress which weakens the immune system. Great excuse to upgrade, eh?

The fish won't necessarily die... I've had fish fully recover from Ich without treatment.

Make sure your water quality is good. I raise my temp to 85-88 degrees and do frequent water changes.

Oh yeah... and cross your fingers!

I feel its still a case by case basis and depends on the health of the fish and it's stress levels when it contracts ich. And how far it progresses.

Not knocking you or your answer Reefman. It's all good. All different points of view.

I had to answer that same question recently. I chose to set up a hospital tank and treat all the fish for ICH (while leaving the main tank fallow for eight weeks).
If your fish live through it, ICH will die out after about 11 months. That is IF you do no add any rock/water/fish from another system that might be harboring ICH. Too many "IFs" for me and my fish did not look happy

My achilles tang and small neon gobies were eventually covered with ICH towards the end
