treating ich in a reef

I do have more tank than coral, but my orched dotty back, and one of my bangii cardinals seem to have gotten it. is there a way to treat the tank for it, or should i try to catch them and treat in a diffrent tank, also there are so many ways to treat what is the best way to get rid of it that you've found?

If you can catch them and treat them separately then that would be ideal, but if you can't, then use a cleaner shrimp. I've found that is the best method so far. I keep one in my tank at all time, I also run a UV when their is an outbreak. A fish trap is a great tool to have on hand at all time too, you can build one out of acrylic

I had a outbreak one time, now I feed the fish with "Garlic" infused food a few times a week, plus a UV 24/7.
Works Great-Good Luck

Re: treating ich in a reef

There are only three known cures for Marine Ich and each requires removing the fish to a hospital tank. This also gets rid of the parasite in the marine system (when you let it go fishless for 8 weeks).

Why not do it once and get it over with? Once done, quarantine all fish to be sure they don't bring it in.

Marine Ich lodges itself below the fish's skin. Cleaner fish don't eat it. Stomachs have been opened to verify this. Since no cleaner fish chews into the flesh of the fish to get at sub-skin parasites, then it is sure they don't affect this parasite.

Cleaner shrimp have never been verified to remove MI parasites in their visual stage. In this stage, as noted above, they are below the fish's skin level and their removal by force opens a wound. Again, this is something cleaner marine life forms don't do.

Fish can develop a resistance or immunity or both, but they are being stress during this state, much like a human with a few dozen mosquito bites.

You can learn more if you'll take the time to read: http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/...ths-facts.html

Good luck!
