Re: Diagnosis Please...arg I cant win!!!

Well then at least there won't be any arguments.

I agree, this fish needs to be medicated right away to have any chance of survival. However, the aggressiveness of treatment it is going to need will be much better done in a separate tank. This thing is progressing quickly and will need to be treated aggressively, IMHO.

Re: Diagnosis Please...arg I cant win!!!

Thanks guys...I'm less worried about Bacterial infections and more concerened with the possibility of the virus spreading. I think it will be tuesday or wednesday this week until I get a chance to rip the tank apart and get this guy out...I don't think I have any other choice!.

ture but they still effect the bio. a imbalance will occur. take neomycin, an aminoglycoside, used mainly on aerobic gram negitive bacteria. not good against anaerobic bacteria, fungi, protazoas and viruses. but it is very effective on aerobic bacteria. binds to receptor sites that prevent protoien synthesis. perhaps it is ok on a sea seahorse tank because of the light bio load, but with continued treaments the ammonia will show its self. a good thing though is once neo is in the fish it prevents the uptake of ammonia so no harm to the fish related to ammonia, bad thing is neo is very toxic and can distroy kidney function. it also has a lingering effect. continues to prevent bacterial growth even though no drug level can be detected.

So, yes, at a low dose it won't harm your bio filter but it will do more harm to your inhabitants in the long run.
humm actually, it will harm your bio even at low doses. becasue of it lingering and toxic effects neo is mainly used as a topical agent and other less toxic antibiotics are use systemically.

Re: Diagnosis Please...arg I cant win!!!

Thanks. I wasn't planning on dosing...more curious.

Debating on ripping everything apart to get this guy out. Good idea or bad idea? Should I wait for a most obvious indication as to what this is?

I agree whole heartedly. If you go back to my first post in this thread you will see that I said to never treat a display tank. And I will continue to say that.

Yes, my experience is with seahorses, but we always treat in a bare bottom hospital tank, never in a cycled tank or a display.

I was merely stating that at a low dose you won't see any harm on your bio filter, but yes it will effect it. Like you said it may take repeated doses to ever see any ammonia, but that doesn't mean it isn't effecting the filter.

We also always treat with a combo of neomycin and triple sulfa. Those 2 work great together.

If you'd like to discuss this further we should start a new thread so we can keep this one on topic. I'd love to learn more about some of the meds.

Re: Diagnosis Please...arg I cant win!!!

i fig you knew, i posted that more of a clarification than a debate. internet posting can seem so black and white.

for this fish, IMO, do what you got to do do get him in a QT. my LFS sells bare 10gal tanks for $10. get the QT ready(with a UV light setup). before you put him in the QT scrape as much of the stuff off you can. use your fingernail if nothing else. then after you put him QT you can post a new thread on treatment options. like what anitibiotics to give prophylactally.

Re: Diagnosis Please...arg I cant win!!!

I have to agree with getting this fish out and into QT. I never meant to sound as if that was not a good idea. I am glad everyone is being so open minded and that is the best thing about Reefsanctuary. Were all here to learn and care for one another.
I like the idea about getting a new thread started on the topic. Please pm it to me when it does. I am over whelmed with threads as it is and could miss it in the mix.

Re: Diagnosis Please...arg I cant win!!!

I'm going to try to get some egg crate to trap it if I can. I don't like the idea of ripping my rock apart to get it and stressing everything else out. My LFS said I could return it and they would put it in QT. Once I bring it to them I will see what I can exchange it for.

Re: Diagnosis Please...arg I cant win!!!

It is fish bites. My doc’s and triggers fighting sometimes and the bit spot looks exactly the same. Lipovit and Garlic on granulates or Mysis/Krill and the wounds healed fast.
