Hi my name's Gary I am a Brit Expat living in Istanbul and set up my first Reef tank this past Monday. Really excited and can't wait for cycling to kick in. Its really hard to leave it alone but its giving me time to hone my testing skills and read up on stock.

The live rock has been going for 4 days now and some tiny translucent snail type things have come out and gone across the glass.Hopefully that's a good sign.

Hello all.
Got the saltwater itch about 4 months ago. was looking on craigslist for a new tank for my brakish green spotted puffers. I had them in a small (15g) tank and wanted a bigger one before I changed them to full salt (now have a 30g and upping there salt, but enough about them). I looked on craigs list and found a sweet deal.
90g tank with oak stand and hood
70 lbs life rock, and crush coral substrate
wet/dry sump
5 power heads, pump for return
skimmer with pump
hood has metal halides and t5s
and many other odds and ends
all for $300....
now its up and running (lots of research and reading to figure out what to do)
currently have
hippo tang
fox face
3 green chromis
2 stripped damsels
2 cleaner shrimp
1 peppermint shrimp
hermit crabs, snails
hawiian feather duster.
all fish are in QT right now as hippo tang got the ich (notorious for it I hear) so I will nip it in the bud now before main tank is infected.
I do have on coral that came with tank. Not sure what it is (looks like a bunch of male pen..s sticking up). want to start getting more

:poke: ok, ok...hi, all. No more forum lurking, I got a login now & gosh darnit I need to just use it.

I've got an addiction & need help; not to cure it mind you, but I'm hoping (and quite sure) you'll all help make it worse, er, better...you know what I mean. And thanks to all of you in advance. I've been thoroughly impressed with the help and hand holding you've provided other newbies before me & am anxious for your assistance.

----

Me ( I've got waaaay too many hobbies...your really not concerned about that, so anyway - fish related) : grew up with freshies & had a couple great tanks that I remember with fondness, not horrific nightmares. Always wanted to get salty but budget, knowledge, and lack of mentor/guidance prohibited it through school & first several years afterwards (did I mention budget, line item of "beer" :clink: :apint: took priority at the time over the line item of salt-tank as far as allocation of funds).

Then, after getting hitched & just before kids - we had moved to a town that had a good, helpful LFS guy. He knew salt & had (still has) great displays in-store. I sold off my old 55 freshie & picked up a 10g with this new "latest & greatest" filter-in-the-hood-all-you-need set up. This along with live rock/sand would be enough to sustain a small salt tank - and to my shock (& relief) it did. Once I got the levels mostly dialed in that lil' fart of a tank rocked pretty steady for a little over 5 years. For my birthday my wife (with the assistance of LFS) got me a 30g Oceanic tank I'd been looking at.

Then we moved, my daughter started kindergarten, & the tank didn't get re-setup in the new house (remodeling projects took priority).

Now, daughter's just started eighth grade, son is in 5th & they want to see water in the tank that is still wrapped in cellophane :hammerhea . (I know, pathetic! I'm working on it.)

So, know you know my story & soon you'll see the "help me" & "need advice" threads from the Minnesota guy.

Hi, everyone. I guess I would consider myself a rookie to the hobby. I had a 50gal reef tank about 12yrs ago that I sold when my first child was born, had it about 1yr with no problems. Well, I'm taking the plunge again. In the works is a 90gal reef ready tank with huge diy protein skimmer from LFS. I will be running a sump (which is new to me) using a mag 9.5 for return and a mag 7 for skimmer. I'm in the process of making some diy live rock, my first batch seems to finally have it's ph come down. I'm also accumulating the dry goods to run this baby. Oh yeah, bought a 4 stage ro/di....going to buy water 12yrs ago was my only pet peeve with the hobby. Once again hello!

It is around 2min and 30 secs that the anemone shows his sadder side... he does this on and off but seems to be more on lately? Any help plz?

I have always loved salt water tanks. I have had a decent amount of fresh water experience, but I now have the time and space to bite the bullet and dive in. I am looking forward to the expertise and knowledge that this community has to offer, since Idaho is some what lacking in the salt water hobby. Hopefully, with a little time and a hole lot of patience, I can join your ranks. I have posted a thread in the SW beginners threads explaining my plans.

Cheers!

Hello all just moved down to Florida from New Jersey was scanning internet and became interested in setting up a small tank. At the moment I am very interested in acquiring a mantis shrimp. I am pretty experienced in the realm of pets yet have never had a salt water tank before. Any information or advice is greatly appreciated. Look forward to meeting everyone.

Hello everyone my name is Pete and I have had a 125 gal FOLWR tank for about a year till the other weekend when we had a power outage, it had for better than medium lions , blue hippo tang, dragon wrasse, green long nose wrasse (forgot the name), foxface, snowflake eel, sailfin tank, marine betta, panther grouper, tomatoe clown, koran angel, and they all came to their fate :tears: except for the eel which we found the next day after the power was restored after 32 hours. My wife, (Nancy), and I purchased a 300 Gal for $300 dollars and was planing on a big transfer for these fish before all this but now want to start a reef tank. I was using 2 rena xp3 canister filters which seemed to do a pretty good job at keeping the water clear for the 125gal. Now that the tank is sitting in the drive way to make room for the new addition to the family I have been looking into sumps, refugiums, protein skimmers and calcium reactors to make a really nice tank. Want to do this right the first time. Also getting a small honda generator so this drastic accident dosent happen again. But anyway I have thought about a complete system from lifereef systems. Jeff and I have talked and he has suggested a LF2-300 trickle filter and a additional refugium, with a VS3-48 Protein skimmer and a LCR2 calcium reactor. Now I have been searching the net and youtube for the best way to go and could use some other help before I make a $4000.00 dollar investment in his system, which I hear are very good and reliable. From what I have read on the net and seen on youtube it really comes as a matter of choice. Well anyway thanks for reaading and look forward to hearing some input.

Hi guys!

Im new to the forums and I am quite excited.
I have a 29g BioCube that I bought from someone else about a month n half ago. It was already cycled and is pretty Amazing! I have a few zoa colonies and torchs. Also have a green BTA, a few crabs and some snails. A red mushroom that grew very big quickly and a few small green mushrooms. I also have 2 black clownfish (not sure if they are percs or osc.) but they have orange fronts. (I was wondering if anyone could verify what kind of clownfish they are without me having to take any pictures). I have a lot of plans for this Cube, and I definitely want to make an external sump for it but contemplating on weather I should use DIY PVC Overflow or drill a hole in the back. (Open to suggestions!!).

I have read somewhere that it is not wise to put different clowns together.. I also have a pair of Maroon Clownfish in another tank that I wanted to put in my BioCube. Not a good idea, right?
