Saltwater to freshwater

Okay, I have a friend who is converting his saltwater tank to a freshwater tank mainly due to not having the time or money to keep the saltwater tank. Anyhoo, I'll be buying his live rock for my brother-in-law's new tank set up. I was also planning on buying his sand, and then he sprung it on me that he was planning on using the sand in his new freshwater tank  Isn't that a HORRIBLE idea??? I think one of the first things they tell you to get rid of when converting from saltwater to freshwater is the rocks and the substrate because reusing them can introduce bacteria from the SW tank to the FW tank. And everything else that is reused like the tank itself, powerheads, etc has to be very thoroughly cleaned. Am I right and it's a really BAD idea for him to try to reuse his substrate? Or am I just smoking crack or something? :dunno:

Beside from my reef tank, I also keep an fresh water tank, built into my bar, where I kept several flowerhorn since last Jan. I've noticed there fishes have been acting weird and the pebbles/subrates have been pushed up against the side of the tank. I never thought that the fishes would atually breed but look like one pushed out a sack of eggs. So here is my question as I have never dealt with this before, what am I supposed to do now? am I supposed to move the eggs as I don't want the baby fish to get pulled in to the filtration system.

I currently have some bristle nose plecos breeding in my tank. I keep finding the babies in the bottom of my canister filter (unharmed, but hard to get out and back in thr tank. I have been covering the intake with cut up pantyhose (wife's, not mine), but this clogs quickly and easily. I am afraid it is hurting the pump.

Where can I find an effective cover for the intake that will keep baby plecos out and water in?

Thanks.
