Hi everyone! This is my first post ever!! woo hoo!

ok, so i have never had a marine aquarium before and from looking around over the last couple of days i am thinking of getting a red sea max (they seem easy for beginners??)

I have seen threads on modding the tank, is this necessary for a first timer like me?? i just want quite a small set-up to learn from (probably gonna get a 130D, but the 250 is very tempting even though i cant afford it!)

neway im rambling, my questions are:

1) is it better to put liver rock rubble in the place of the filter media?
2) how noisy is the beast?

Thats all i can think of so far but im sure there will be lots more once i get the tank!!!

Many Thanks,

so i've had my rsm250 running now for almost 3 months. and from the start i had overheating issues and when i turned off the skimmer i couldn't get it to start back up again. after the third time, i pulled out the whole thing and took a good long look at the pump thinking maybe there was just somthing stuck in there or binding up. nothing stuck but interesting enough, the impeller was binding on the shaft. so much so that it was hard to turn the impeller on the shaft by hand. so i took some fine sandpaper to the shaft. after a bit(close to 45 minutes) i had taken enough off to be able to easily spin the impeller under a stream of water from my sink.so i put all this back together and it started right up no problem. so i was thinking maybe i fixed that start/stop problem. so, i waited a week to try again. and almost suprisingly--it didn't start back up!( i was hoping i had actually figured out somthing of usefullness here, oh well). so the pump still doesn't work right but on a related note, my temp has been more stable.i'm thinking the friction from the impeller was part of the heating issue.it still goes up and down 2 degrees with my lights though.
another problem i've had was with the impeller on the 600gph pump. it broke
Image: http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac335/anewguy_photos/shaftimpeller.jpg
you can also see where the shaft has been worn by the impeller. keep in mind that this is only 3 months old!
Image: http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac335/anewguy_photos/shaft.jpg
now, this guy breaks at 2am so i cant just go get another pump off another tank very easily. so i take out my superglue and put all this back together.the glue had seeped in the hole so once again i sandpaper the shaft till it fits.
anyway, everything is back up and running again for now.with two out of three pumps not working right i'm not too confident about that though.

Hello,
I got out my new Tunze 9002 last night and decided to try it out on one of my tanks. I have a few questions:

1) How deep in water should the skimmer be? The instruction booklet states the water line, but I've read on forums that 1/2 inch below that line is more ideal...I'm really confused.

2) How tall should the foam be in the foam tower? Currently my foam reaches just above the very bottom of the foam tower when the airline tubing is completely open. How can I make the foam go higher?

How much Live Rock should you put in a 130 Tank.
Is 15kg about right or should you put in more?

Thanks

Attaching corals/frags to live rock already in the tank

Hey everyone. Here's my question of the day :)

What do you use to attach frags and larger corals to your live rock? I'm sure one of the better methods would be to remove the rock from the tank and attach outside. I'd prefer not to have to do that as I really don't want to be removing any LR at this point.

I've attached a few frags near the top of my tank and that's gone really well. I used a base of epoxy with a dab of coral gel. Attaching things a bit lower has been a problem as it seems the gel hardens up on contact with the water. Maybe I need to be quicker? :)

So epoxy? Superglue, Coral gel? Combination?

Thanks

As I pop around the web I find that I am always looking to research corals. I'm looking for some of the sites that my fellow RSMers might use.

I'm not actually looking for sites to purchase corals but more information and care sites. If it happens to be a site where you can purchase as well that would be great.

I find myself at Aquarium Fish: Tropical Freshwater Fish and Saltwater Fish for Home Aquariums (http://www.liveaquaria.com) quite often.

So where do you folks look?

Any RSM owners using aftermarket light fixtures other than the discontinued Outer Orbit or the Odyssea knock-offs? I am ready to make a change and finding Outer Orbits are nearly impossible. I have found one new but the price is high. Anyone use the Aquatic Life T5 HO Light Fixtures w/ Lunar LED's on their RSM or any other tank? It seems like it might be an alternative to the high price of the Outer Orbit and easier on the power bill since it only runs T5's. I do like the built in timer. I am hoping it can provide better lighting to support a broader range of coral with better growth. It seems like 6 months is all that the stock bulbs are good for and lately my coral growth has nearly ceased so it's time for an upgrade. Thoughts and opinions?

tank cycled, advice needed

Hello all

Ok, tank has cycled super quick (9 days) with ammonia and nitrate 0, and 10ppm nitrate (presumably leftovers from the semi cured live rock). Got a nice diatom bloom, and loads of different algae growing out of the rock. Have just done a 30% water change, and was thinking about adding some livestock when the reading have been zero for a week.

Would you recommend going for a clean up crew or a single hardy fish first? I've got some great algae of different form and habit growing out of the rock (think I've got my first aiptasia as well, he gets a few weeks grace till he grows a bit, till I can identify properly) and I don't really want to lose these algae completely if I introduce some ravenous herbivores. Saying that I realise that snails play an important role in keeping problem algae down.

Not an easy one I know, but any advice will be great.

Thanks

Hi, I have two questions.
First….I use the red sea coral pro salt but find the ALK to run low. I was wondering if other people use this and find they need to dose the water before doing a water change. What is the ideal alkalinity for a reef / fish tank? and what is the best thing to dose with?

Second… I get a lot of brown crud in the container that I keep my mixed salt water in. I generally keep about 15 gals mixed and ready to go with an air stone, power head and heater running. I buy RO water from my LSF. I was wondering if any body else has the same problem.
