So my leather is splitting...my question is, what do I do when it finally splits all the way? It's getting very close (I feel like it's having a baby or something ha) and well....will it attach itself to the rock below or am I going to have to step in and help?

I just turned the lights on, you can clearly see what's going on here!

Hey guys,

I'm just starting to finally set up my quarantine tank. My only question is about lighting. I plan on starting a 10 gallon QT. What would be adequate lighting for corals in a tank this small? Also, try to be as cost effective as possible since the QT tank will only be used ocassionally. I don't need anything that is tripped out. I just want something adequate for keeping the corals alive and content while they are in quarantine. Thanks!

I have an extremely large toadstool 12X13 or something close to that, how does one measure underwater? It has been extremely healthy until I got two osc clowns. They already have beaten a bubble coral to death and now they have started playing in the center of the toadstool and it has started to remain pale and hairless after the balance of the coral has turned dark brown and hairy. Any ideas....can't build a fence over the center. Bubba

Yesterday, I noticed that one of my fuzzy mushrooms was looking a bit odd. I left for a few hours, and when I came back home, I noticed that the mushroom looked normal again and was climbing down the rock it had been placed on. Hmmm. Then I noticed that there was still a shroom on top of that rock. That's when I realized that my mushroom had split. I've only had the tank a bit over a month or so. I bought an already established system. This was the first I had noticed any of the mushrooms splitting. I have noticed some growth in the hammer coral and gsp. I'm assuming since I have been seeing growth and now that the mushroom has split that it means my tank must be doing okay. You wouldn't see growth in a poorly maintained tank would you? Don't laugh. I'm still pretty new to this hobby.

Proper placement for corals

I just changed my rockwork after deciding I didn't care for the placement of the rocks I had. I also changed the placement of the powerheads. Anyhoo, I've had the tank about 1 1/2 mths. I bought an already established system and this is all coral that came with it. I'm trying to find the best location for a few corals. I have a colony of red acans, a ricordea, a lobed brain, a favia, a candy cane coral, and a hammer coral that need good homes in the tank. The tank is 25 gallons and the dimensions are 24Lx20Hx12D. My lighting fixture is a 150W MH. So where should these types of corals be placed in terms of the lighting and flow? Also, down the road when I do get some new corals, how does one go about acclimating a coral to the amount of light it will be getting? I believe they can bleach if you don't acclimate them, right?

p.s. the polyps are much smaller than my other acan!

My orange and teal acan is slowly being eaten by something. The lower polyps seem to slowly be disappearing. I first noticed it a few weeks ago when I noticed the skeleton showing in an area now the polyp is almost gone whatever it is works from the bottom up. I do not think it is any shrimp I do have pepermint and blood but I never notice them in that area. I think it may be some small parsite or something. Can I did the coral in Tropic Marin dip and the lable says great for arco but can you also did LPS?

Lighting for Surf & Turf (acropora loisettae)?

I just picked up a beautiful Surf and Turf frag from my LFS. It is mostly green with light blue tips. I really like the dark green teal color and I am wondering if anyone has advice for best lighting placement to keep the green color.
I put a recently aquired ORA Blue Iris frag (it, too had green base, blue tips) near the top of my tank, and while it is thriving and still looks great, the blue/purple that used to just be at the tips has replaced the green the branches and base used to have.
Would placing the Surf and Turf lower in the tank help preserve the green color?
My tank is 18 inch tall X 48 inch wide, 55 gallon, lit by 48 inch sunpod light with two 250w MH's
Thanks for any advice,
Kurt

Out Of Control Xenia...need Advice For Propogation

So...my tank is just about a year old, and I bought a stalk of tiny pulsing xenia over the summer. I love the way it pulses, and I think that mesmerized me because I've been staring at it all along and now its just wayyyy out of control. Its taking over my tank and blocking out light to the other corals. Id like to buy some different corals, and I have no place to put them now!
What is the best way to frag them to sell? Ive never fragged a coral before so Im very new at this. From what Ive read...it seems like all I do is cut the coral at the base as close as I can get to the rock, then attach it to a rock or plug with a rubber band, and wait until it attaches itself to the rock or plug. Is that the best way? Also, will it grow back I do not remove everything from its original location in the tank.
Heres some pics....two are from way earlier to show the crazy growth.

I bought a small frag of an orange Pavona. I loved the intricate mesh pattern of shades of orange. I am finding different online lighting requirements. I had mine on the sand bed under a 150 mh and it bleached within a few days. I since moved it under the shifting shade of my kenya tree and it is slowly getting its beautiful color again. Can these grow to withstand MH or will I have to think of something more permanent in the shade. Since it looks like it is an encusting type I may be limited to shade areas.

Sorry if this is a stupid question...I'm completely redoing my aquascaping right now, and my elegance has a very long skeleton. Its hard to place in the rocks where its stable, and I'd like to trim it down a little to fit it in my aquascaping. I don't know how much of the visible skeleton the coral is still using though. How much of this skeleton can I cut off without hurting the coral? Its sitting in a standard water bottle for scale.

Chalice and Acan question?!

I have some general questions about chalice and acan corals? Lighting requirements, placement, flow, etc.? I have a 20 gallon long reef tank. It has been up and running just shy of a year. A picture of the tank can be seen on my other thread on the 2nd page at the bottom. that was a couple of weeks ago before I added the clam that is pictured with it.

http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/nano-reefs/38937-my-new-project-2.html

(sorry I can't just post the picture to this thread but it won't let me upload it to the thread since it's already on the other thread....I'm a computer dummy anyway so I'm sure there is some way to do it, but I just don't know how!)

I have a Nova T5 fixture with 18k bulb and blue actinic light, and two Koralia #2's for flow. I have cleared some room in the tank by getting rid of some of the xenia so I have more room for some corals and I have found some Chalice and acan's that I really like, but I don't know much about them. My params are fine....Salinity at 1.025, pH 8.2, Nitrates 0, Nitrites 0, Ammonia 0, calcium at 450-500. I do weekly water changes taking out about 5 gallons using RO/DI water as my water source. So anyways any input on these would be great. Thanks in advance!

Hey RC!

I have had my 29gal biocube for 3 years now and its been doing great! All my lps and softies grow great and show great color! but... i can not maintain life in SPS.. its kinda getting annoying.... I use to have MH on it and did well! untill it dropped into the tank... but will skip over that :worried: So recently i upgraded my flow to Mp10 and decided to go with T5 to cut down evaportaion to so i got the Nova extreme pro HOT5. The SPS i do buy are not normally the hard ones to keep but ill keep them for a few days then they start to bleach out :( i use nano part A&B every 3 days i run chemi-pure, my temp is usually between 79 at night and gets about 81ish during day. My pars are usually good! water changes once a week/ week and half. The one thing i have heard is i have a devils hand leather and i have heard they put a toxin in the water and stuns the sps? not sure if this is a fact though but its in the back of my head lol, hate to get rid of if that was not it beacuse it is such a great piece.

Any help or comments would be great. Thanks! :D
