T5 lighting for my 90 gal. reef

Well my 90 gallon tank has been up and running for about 6 months now and with the exception of the typical ich outbreak that took out 3 of my fish, I won't be making that newbie mistake again, the green cup coral and zoanths are doing very well. The one thing I am not very happy with is the t5/MH light I installed. I don't plan on keeping any SPS, Clams or the like and I think the T5 fixtures will be a better choice for me. I have been looking at the Nova Extreme Pro 6x54w and the Nova Extreme 8x54w with 4 lunar lights. I really like the lunar lights because I have them now but I am wondering if the 8X54w is going to be too much light? I have been doing a lot of reading and I see a lot of people have the 6X54w T5's on their 90 gallons and seem to be very happy with it. The 8x54w fixtures fall within the 3 to 5 watts per gallon generally used to find the right lighting for a tank but I know there are other things like light frequency to consider also. Anyway, I would just like to get some feed back form some of you on the subject. Thanks, Jim

Do I clean the algae from my tubing

Hey everyone,
I have a 55 gallon main tank with a 20 gallon sump. Its been up for a couple of years and I have had a thick green algae in the tubing for just about as long. The tubing is the clear vinyl stuff. The question is....do I clean it out? There is no algae in my main tank or in my sump but since the tubing is clear I can see how much is in there.

And...if I should clean it out what if it comes back quickly? Would I need to disasssemble my plumbing regularly to get it out?

RO unit help

Hi all, I have a RO unit for two months now. This model is intended mainly for drinking water as it comes with 3 canisters (2 mechanical filters and 1 carbon), booster pump, RO membrane, another carbon filter after RO and storing tank.
I have two questions:

1.- How can I know if booster pump is working? Feeding pressure is very high and it may not be needed, but, how can I make a test in order to force it to run?

2.- I've noticed a very thin oily film in RO water surface. What is that? Where does it come from? When mix SW left a powerhead with air inlet mixing for 24 hrs. I guess air bubbles act like a skimmer and this film start to concentrate so I can easily remove it with a net. Any ideas?

 Im planning to add a DI unit, any suggestion?

Greetings

How do you protect metal parts around your tank area?

Examples of what I'm talking about would be:

* Hinges in the cabinet
* Clamps & Straps for plumbing
* Brackets
* Screws

Anything metal that's not IN the tank but close enough to be "affected" by the salty conditions.

Sorry but im really new to reefing.
I just got my lighting system in to day the guy said that it had a ballast but I dont know if it does. I pluged it in and it ran for about 10 to 15 minutes then I guess blew the power out of that outlet. All my filtration and everything stopped. So I was wondering if it has a ballast, Im still not really sure what one is.

Thanks for all the help

Hello all currently I have a wet dry trickle setup with a filter tray. I would love to yank it all out and modify it to a filter sock. Will taking out the Bio Balls all at once have any negative effect? Over 100 gallons in my system and 85ish pounds of live rock. Been running for a year.

We had a Fluval 300w heater die last month, it caused me a couple of days of grief. It was replaced under warranty, so no issues there. How ever, with winter is coming fast, I normally keep the house about 67F during the winter months. This mainly to cut the utility costs.

I'm thinking about buying another heater for a backup. What model would be recommended by you? I try to keep my tank about 78-80F.

Thanks for your time

Yea! I finally got some new lights. These just went on my 50 gallon. It looks like it is actually about 36.25 inches wide (not 36"). I wasnt able to put the sides back on my canopy due to that extra quarter inch...Im gonna have to do some modifications.

I took 2 photos using the same exposures so you could see the difference in the lights. I set up the first shot for proper exposure to the old lighting which was a 24" Coralife Aqualight. It had 2 65W CF bulbs. One was 10,000K the other actinic.

Here is the old 24" Coralife Aqualight
Image: http://www.trimensionstudios.com/reef/light1.jpg

Then I put the new light on, left the exposure the same and took a picture of the new T5s. Here is the new light
Image: http://www.trimensionstudios.com/reef/light2.jpg

Of course in real life the light doesnt bleed out like that...it is just over exposed in that shot but I wanted to show a comparision of the brightness of the new lights. Awesome!!

Also, the sides are off of the canopy in the second shot which is why so much light is spilling onto the walls.

K my sump is chamber 1 (PS), chamber 2 (return), chamber 3 (Fuge)

over on my triple baffle the 2 nd baffle that is 1" off the bottom, is sitting at the height of 16" with the glass being 15" and the 3rd baffle is 13" high. I like to use as much of the 3rd chamber for the fuge. Trying to figure what a good height and thinking of 16" - 18".

The water from this chamber will overflow the wall into the chamber 2 the water return. My only concern is the height of water flowing into the chamber since the 3rd baffle wall is only 13" so it would leave the water falling between 3"-5". Would this amount of fall cause any air bubbles or micro bubbles in the return section?

MH bulbs vibrating and shutting off...

I have a light fixture with 3, 250W MH single end bulbs. I bought the fixture brand new from ebay and everything worked fine on arrival. I had a stock bulb burn out about 2 months after I received the fixture, so I bought 3 brand new bulbs and kept the remaining two as backups. Lately I have noticed that the middle bulb will vibrate and flicker right as it tries to turn on, but then will kick off. It will start this again about a minute later and after about the third or fourth try, it will actually stay on and warm up. Today I noticed that after 2 hours of trying it still had not managed to actually stay on. I turned off all of the MH's and let them sit for about 10 minutes. I turned them back on with the same result with the middle MH and the far left MH started to vibrate and flicker as well, although finally kicked on after the 2nd attempt.

I did find a thread on here that was talking about "corrosion on the pins", although not sure how that translates with a screw-in, single sided MH bulb. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. If the specifics of the bulbs or fixture itself prove necessary, I can post that information as well.
