Okay, I have a friend who is converting his saltwater tank to a freshwater tank mainly due to not having the time or money to keep the saltwater tank. Anyhoo, I'll be buying his live rock for my brother-in-law's new tank set up. I was also planning on buying his sand, and then he sprung it on me that he was planning on using the sand in his new freshwater tank  Isn't that a HORRIBLE idea??? I think one of the first things they tell you to get rid of when converting from saltwater to freshwater is the rocks and the substrate because reusing them can introduce bacteria from the SW tank to the FW tank. And everything else that is reused like the tank itself, powerheads, etc has to be very thoroughly cleaned. Am I right and it's a really BAD idea for him to try to reuse his substrate? Or am I just smoking crack or something? :dunno:

I just turned the lights on, you can clearly see what's going on here!

Question about cycling a tank

Okay, I know how to cycle a tank. Just finished cycling my new nano aquarium. My question regards my brother-in-law's tank. They currently have a 50 gallon corner unit that we have been looking to replace because of filtration issues (not enough room for sump/fuge, etc) and inadequate lighting for corals. They are going today to look at a 65 gallon aquarium/sump/MH lights/UV sterilizer system that is NOT running. I do think they will buy it as long as it is in decent condition because it is an awesome deal I found on craigslist. The would be getting the entire system for less than the cost of the lights.

Anyhoo, my main question is a local reefer posted on the local site and is breaking down his 120 gallon aquarium. We are probably going to be buying all the live sand and live rock for the new aquarium from him. I don't particularly care for the LR in the system they already have (not many nooks and crannies) and I hate their substrate which is rather course crushed coral. We might also be upgrading the sump to his already-running 55 gallon sump if it will fit in the closet we'd like to put it into. So while the aquarium they would be buying is not a currently running system, everything going into it would be from an already running tank. Will we still see a cycle in that case? I'm assuming that the rocks and sand already have all the nitrifying bacteria built up which is what cycling does so since it is already there, will the system still cycle or will it be possibly just a brief cycle?

T5 lighting for my 90 gal. reef

Well my 90 gallon tank has been up and running for about 6 months now and with the exception of the typical ich outbreak that took out 3 of my fish, I won't be making that newbie mistake again, the green cup coral and zoanths are doing very well. The one thing I am not very happy with is the t5/MH light I installed. I don't plan on keeping any SPS, Clams or the like and I think the T5 fixtures will be a better choice for me. I have been looking at the Nova Extreme Pro 6x54w and the Nova Extreme 8x54w with 4 lunar lights. I really like the lunar lights because I have them now but I am wondering if the 8X54w is going to be too much light? I have been doing a lot of reading and I see a lot of people have the 6X54w T5's on their 90 gallons and seem to be very happy with it. The 8x54w fixtures fall within the 3 to 5 watts per gallon generally used to find the right lighting for a tank but I know there are other things like light frequency to consider also. Anyway, I would just like to get some feed back form some of you on the subject. Thanks, Jim

Hey all,

I'm considering buying a digital pH meter/monitor but I'm not sure which one to buy and if it is a good thing at all...
I've come upon the following website that was adviced somewhere on this forum:
Aquarium Controllers & Monitors for pH, mV (ORP) and Temperature | Marine Depot (http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_AquariumPage.aspx?PageAlias=controllers__index)

Anybody got experience with any of them? If so, what would you advice (not too pricey though:) )

thanks

so i've had my rsm250 running now for almost 3 months. and from the start i had overheating issues and when i turned off the skimmer i couldn't get it to start back up again. after the third time, i pulled out the whole thing and took a good long look at the pump thinking maybe there was just somthing stuck in there or binding up. nothing stuck but interesting enough, the impeller was binding on the shaft. so much so that it was hard to turn the impeller on the shaft by hand. so i took some fine sandpaper to the shaft. after a bit(close to 45 minutes) i had taken enough off to be able to easily spin the impeller under a stream of water from my sink.so i put all this back together and it started right up no problem. so i was thinking maybe i fixed that start/stop problem. so, i waited a week to try again. and almost suprisingly--it didn't start back up!( i was hoping i had actually figured out somthing of usefullness here, oh well). so the pump still doesn't work right but on a related note, my temp has been more stable.i'm thinking the friction from the impeller was part of the heating issue.it still goes up and down 2 degrees with my lights though.
another problem i've had was with the impeller on the 600gph pump. it broke
Image: http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac335/anewguy_photos/shaftimpeller.jpg
you can also see where the shaft has been worn by the impeller. keep in mind that this is only 3 months old!
Image: http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac335/anewguy_photos/shaft.jpg
now, this guy breaks at 2am so i cant just go get another pump off another tank very easily. so i take out my superglue and put all this back together.the glue had seeped in the hole so once again i sandpaper the shaft till it fits.
anyway, everything is back up and running again for now.with two out of three pumps not working right i'm not too confident about that though.

Hello,
I got out my new Tunze 9002 last night and decided to try it out on one of my tanks. I have a few questions:

1) How deep in water should the skimmer be? The instruction booklet states the water line, but I've read on forums that 1/2 inch below that line is more ideal...I'm really confused.

2) How tall should the foam be in the foam tower? Currently my foam reaches just above the very bottom of the foam tower when the airline tubing is completely open. How can I make the foam go higher?
