| Tubeworm | Re: protien skimmer Ok first off you dont NEED to upgrade the lighting on a NC24. The PC lighting is great for soft corals and LPS corals. If you do go with a 150 watt HQI. As for a skimmer for the NC24 a Remora Nano, CRP Bak Pak, even Sea Clones will all work great on a NC. I think Tunze makes a good nano skimmer too. Anything else is a waste of money, you might as well do water changes. |

Fish produce a lot of waste products, much more so than inverts or corals. In addition a FOWLR may contain some big fish or a large number of fish compared to a reef. Even in a reef, fish, are usually, by far, the main producer or waste products. While fish do not requite water as pristine as what would be required for a reef, water quality is still everything. Better water quality means a lot healthier livestock, and less problems. Using a skimmer will remove a lot of waste products before the biological filtration needs to deal with them. In addition, it's also cheep insurance if something dies. The additional skimmate tells you to start looking for a problem. While it's possible to set up a system without a skimmer, this is not something I'd recommend, even on a FO or FOWLR. | |
