| Serpent Star | actinic lighting Iam looking to add a standard florescent light into my canopy which holds a 150w de mh. My question is do i have to worry about the heat from the mh causing the florescent bulb to shatter? I made this canopy for my ten gallon tank, so the bulb would have to be preety close to the mh. |

| Has been struck by the ban stick | Re: actinic lighting im not sure, But I dont think a standard FLO actinic would have enough power to even show even a slight amount of color, might have to go with a pc or T5 retro fit. |

| Has been struck by the ban stick | Re: actinic lighting what kind of MH is it 10k/14k/12k? some dont use any other light supplementation with their MH, I do not have MH though, its just a trend that I see as far as PCs/T5s + MHs. |

| Midas Blenny | Re: actinic lighting It's pretty much an aesthetic thing... In my experience .... don't throw anything away lol later on you'd be surprised how much stuff you thought was useless all of a sudden becomes part of a DIY project or something lol but that's just me I'm kinda a hermit i guess a hoarder am I? ... lol maybe ..... even a trip through walmart or something and i'm looking at stuff going "how can i use that on my reef tank?" lol or "man this would be perfect!" lol .... ![]()

| Has been struck by the ban stick | Re: actinic lighting A normal output (NO) fluorescent bulb will provide additional appreciated light, but as for whether or not you will notice it is debatable, but any corals in your tank will appreciate it. Some people like the appearance of more short wave length lighting. Where as a lot of corals can actually use it regardless of whether you can see a difference or not. HO fluorescents are OK lighting for about all corals but the shallower water stony corals, but it is close to impossible, if not impossible, to provide the amount of lighting needed by the stony corals as you can not fit enough fat tubes with individual reflectors over a tank. |

| Elegance coral | Re: actinic lighting Heh... I'm using an old 20w NO Fluorescent to try and find a leak on this chiller I bought. I bought the freon (or whatever it's called now) with the "Leak Detector" (green fluorescent dye) in it.
