red sea hydrometer

i thought i would replace my old cheap sea test brand hydrometer, i picked up a red sea hydrometer/temp and man i just got 5 different readings from 5 tests, not just a small change either, it went from the lowest to the highest and everywhere in between. i thought red sea products were quality items or is this probly just a defective gauge?

Re: red sea hydrometer

hydrometers are wothless IMHO.

Refractometers are much more reliable...

Re: red sea hydrometer

maybe i should of mentioned this is one that can be stuck the the inside wall and i planned on putting in behind some rock work in a corner out of the way, i thought it would be nice and handy to have.

p.s beezlebob i wasnt in the market for a refractometer, if i was i would of purchased one from fosters and smith. hence, no need to research for one or information for one on this forum. furthermore i am a little disapointed that after making a post as to the quality of a product or company name, turns into me buying P.O.S things and that i should have bought one from a seller on this forum

Re: red sea hydrometer

we were telling you that ANY of those swing arm hydrometers aren't worth a POT TO PEE** IN.....and we made a suggestion if you want accurate salinity/specific gravity readings. So dont get so defensive...take it how you want to.

Re: red sea hydrometer

I agree with Daniel. Being in the Business that is why I try to educate. @ my shop if some one comes in & doesnt have a refractometer & cant afford one I give hyrometers away. They are very inaccurate it the point that is trying to be made if you are happy with the red sea ( which I will give you this red seas is the best on the market) But still not 100% accurate everytime.

Re: red sea hydrometer

well ok, someday when i have the extra money i will get one. the thing is i already knew they are the "best" way to go. that just wasnt my question. i guess i was wondering about the red sea products < i was also looking into buying a few different test kits from red sea> and if anyone had one of the hydrometers i was talking about, which i took back to the store today and exchanged for a new one. i put it in the sump when i cleaned it and it really is pretty slick, temp and s.g at a glance. when i do have a refracometer i can check it with that..

Re: red sea hydrometer

Suggesting that you buy from a dude on our forum only has to do with price, being that was your main concern.

hydrometers are extremely inaccurate, especially if you dont let them cure, and callibrated against a refracto.

there are no good results cutting corners in this hobby, (@least in my experience) so i dont see why a $30 implement is out of financial reach.

I do my best to tell it like it is. no sugar no honey.

Hydrometers are worthless, and a waste of your $$$$$$$. its not a personal attack, just a simple fact.

so dont get all butthurt when you ask a question, and dont like the answer.

the point of this forum is the advancement of the hobby, not to make you feel better about a bad purchase that could have been averted.
